So the cards will likely match up

Re: Playoff thread

I'm going to guess Lackey gets one of the first 3 starts. They made a pretty big deal about his playoff experience. I doubt he waits until Game 4, even if he should.

Re: Playoff thread

What i like about waino, miller and even lynn is on the right night they are unbeatable.  That is what the cardinals need.   Lackey to me is serviceable.

Re: Playoff thread

Really is of little consequence. We're playing with the bank's money at this point. We had no business playing that bad and getting this far.

Anything done from here out is just gravy! Sounds like 2011.

Or 2006.

Re: Playoff thread

Taking a stab at the roster for the NLDS:

Molina
Adams
Wong
Peralta
Carpenter
Holliday
Jay
Taveras
Grichuk
Descalso
Bourjos
Pierzynski
Ellis

Wainwright
Lynn
Miller
Lackey
Rosenthal
Maness
Martinez
Choate
Freeman
Neshek
Motte
Wacha

The only real variable is whether MM takes 11 or 12 pitchers. If it's 11, he'll probably leave off Wacha or Lackey, whomever he doesn't plan to start in Game 4. Maybe add a bat off the bench, like Scruggs or even Cruz, who can play first and third in an emergency.
Even if he takes 12 pitchers, I wouldn't pick Siegrist. He's been way too unreliable this year. They're going to need Choate and Freeman to nut up, because Gonzalez will need to be neutralized if they're going to win the series. I probably wouldn't take Motte either, for the same reason I'd leave off Siegrist. I'd rather add Lyons, who can give you a couple of innings.
I wouldn't take Ellis, but MM will because of his veteran presence. I'd rather have Kozma. He can play two positions, not just one.

Re: Playoff thread

I'm calling it now Cardinals vs Royals in the World Series.

Despite a 3-2 series lead, we lose in 7 due to a very questionable call in game 6.

Re: Playoff thread

I think Cruz will make it.  It gives Matheny the ability to use Pierzynski as a pinch hitter without hsi phobia about using his only backup catcher.

14 position players, 11 pitchers.  I'm not convinced Motte makes it.  I'd seriously consider Gonzalez over Wacha, for exactly the reason you gave, but it won't happen.

Re: Playoff thread

Gonzales has been very good lately .

I'd dump Ellis and AJ for two warm bodies .

Re: Playoff thread

To me motte and ellis are on the bubble.  I agree on going with kozma.  Neither him nor ellis can hit and kozma is a plus defender at several position.  Plus he has a wierd clutch nack.

I think a case can be made for lyons.  The dodgers have 4 everyday lefties.  Lyons splits are glarring.  Lefties are batting .091 against him.

Re: Playoff thread

It's not necessarily the lineup I'd use. I'm trying to think like Matheny (and my head is starting to hurt). I think he'd take a reliever over Lyons and/or Gonzalez because they're both starters. But, on the other hand, the Cardinals have basically said Wacha is useless if he's not starting because of his injury, so why include him if he's not going to start?
He'll take Ellis because a) the Dodgers will start left-handed pitchers in games 1, 3 and 5; and b) he doesn't have the stones not to.

I think it is going to take strong starting pitch and patchwork in the bullpen to even make this a series.  I dont think matheny has it in him no matter who is on the roster.

Re: Playoff thread

Waino, Lynn, Lackey and Miller will be the four man postseason rotation with Wacha in the bullpen.

As much as I wanted Wacha to get back to form, he just isn't there yet. I agree with this.
