Again I never said it was going to cripple the franchise. I am saying that it isnt logical. Again it is TLR getting someone signed because he favors them over guys in the system and ownership doing his bidding even though they have publicly said that isnt the direction the want to go. This is the same lack of direction that was being used when they fired Walt. It is the lack of direction that fuel Ryan and Rasmus to say "fuck the veterns". It is the same logic that put Miles back on the roster or gave Winn at bats over Craig. We could have seen more of what Craig had to offer and if he was a solution in 2011 if Winn wasnt signed. How much did those moves cost the club? I assume it adds up. Maybe only to a couple of million but a couple of million could add a bullpen arm that would make a hell of alot more difference them Liard. A mistake and waste of money is wrong no matter what size it is.
Setting aside your own opinion of Miles and Winn, do you honestly believe that Miles and Winn were signed because Larussa wanted them simply to avoid playing people from the minors or because he felt they gave the team a better chance to win?
BTW, Winn and Miles cost the team well under a million last season, not anywhere near a couple of million.

I am looking forward to seeing how this roster responds and seeing Theriot and Berkman play but I am not going to kid myself about why they were added to this team.
I thought they were added to the team to help it win. You apparently believe otherwise. Please explain it to me.

No, but does it matter? A better question would be "Did Miles and Winn give the team a better chance to win, and if not who brought them here?"

That's a bit misleading, because the only way they cost well under a million is by using their prorated salaries, and by that measure, the minimum wagers also cost proportionally less than their $415,000, or whatever.

Yes I believe they were signed or at least remained signed because TLR wanted them over the minor league options. Do you really believe that Miles and Winn were better then internal options?
Winn + Miles + Liard = Kerry Wood (hypothetically of course)

Like I said I am happy to see them added. I liked both player before the Cardinals signed them. They were add to help the team win. TLR wouldnt want anyone who didnt help his chances. To me ownership has allowed TLR to hand pick players for one last run at the post season. Sure I would like to see that but I am not going to get giddy about a first baseman in the outfield. I also dont think it is wise to let managers make roster moves. It is dysfunctional. I feel that is what has happen the last several years. Maybe it all works out. Maybe it doesnt, TLR leaves and Pujols signs someplace else.

Incorrect. The Cardinals only had to pay league minimum for Winn and Miles. If neither had been signed, they would have had to pay at least that much to someone. Financially, Winn and Miles were a wash with whoever else might have held those roster spots.
Laird's $1M contract is $600K more than potential replacement.
Sorry AP, but your "wasted money" theory just doesn't work.

I believe Winn's contract was higher then league min but he was DFA by the Yankees so I guess they flipped the bill.
So it isnt a history of wasting money but it is still $600,000 and it is retarded. Like I said in the "Ryan Traded" thread it has to add to dissconnect between younger and older players.
