Re: NLCS game 3

Not a good start.  Grichuk should have had that ball but it wasnt an easy play with the wind and jacked up outfield.

I think in SF it should be Bourjos-Jay.

Re: NLCS game 3

I dont think you should go with grichuk every game.  He hasnt earned that right and he isnt hitting well enough to deserve blind faith.  Mix it up and get some energy.

Agreed.

Then again maybe Grichuk was a good idea.

Re: NLCS game 3

This is my point with rosenthal....do you really want him pitching in this situation. Not that i feel real good about neshek.

Nice job by adams and maness.  Getting the leadoff man is huge.  I dont like a bullpen battle tho.

Re: NLCS game 3

That game was as horribly managed  as any I've ever seen. I seriously wonder if Matheny has a clue.

Where to start. We already hashed out the decision to start Grichuk, so I'll leave that alone. Let's focus on the pitching.  Gonzalez throws a perfect inning. He's been a starter most of the year. The Giants have Panik (a LH hitter), Posey and Sandoval (who hit .199 against LHP) coming up, so naturally Matheny goes to Neshek because why?  Because the "Matheny Book" says Neshek has to pitch the 8th?  Beyond dumb.

But, Neshek has to pitch the 8th and pitched a perfect inning. The Cardinals go in order, meaning Neshek didn't bat. So Neshek can pitch a second inning, right?  Can't do that, we might need him tomorrow. OK, let me give him the benefit of the doubt and say that's a valid point. Clearly Neshek can face Pence (RH), setting up Choate for Belt and then Manness. Of course not, have to start the inning with Manness. OK, fine. But at the very least, clearly Matheny is going to double-switch Bourjos for Grichuk, allowing Bourjos to lead off the 10th and Manness to pitch more than 1 inning. I mean, this isn't rocket science.

And OK, I know 2 of the 3 hitters Choate faced were LH, but for gods sake when was the last time Choate faced 3 hitters?  You have Martinez available. I assume Wacha is available--and if not, why is he on the roster.

If I can figure it out sitting in my car, why can't a major league manager who is actually watching the game?  Just awful.

Re: NLCS game 3

Yeah, where to begin. Grichuk. Well I'll give him a little props. Wind was playing hell over there in right field certainly, and he did homer to get us back into things.

Bullpen however. You cannot leave Choate in there. Not in the 10th inning of a game that we clawed our way back into like that. Matheny has no problem saving arms, but the reality is Wacha either needs to be used or left off the roster for someone who can play. If you have to hold Carlos Martinez because you're sticking with Rosey as your closer, and need someone to go to in case Rosey can't do it, demote Rosey and make Martinez the damned closer. You're wasting two bullpen arms there for one job.

Bullpen working a perfect inning. These guys need to get more than 1 inning of work. They can go for more. When you're tied late, at least let your guy run into a baserunner before you pull him out unless you're going with a pinch hitter.

Stupid.... I am very manager tolerant myself, because I know that fans only focus on the one or two moves that go wrong.... But losing with Choate on the mound is just brutal. That's the least capable reliever we have... It's a lot like a pitcher getting torched on his worst pitch.... If you can throw 100, the last thing you want to do is lose a game hanging a breaking ball that you've been learning how to throw for a month...

Re: NLCS game 3

Shockingly enough, I'm going to come to Matheny's defense for yesterday.

I know the move seemed like it should've been to pull Choate against Juan Perez, but Juan Perez is basically a pitcher at the plate and he should've been able to retire him. Plus, going to Martinez against Blanco and Panik is asking for trouble. Choate was just bad yesterday.

I got home in time to see the last inning. As soon as Perez missed the second bunt attempt, I turned to my wife and said "Watch, now that he's got two strikes, he'll get a hit."
