Re: Taveras Fatally Injured in Accident

Fucking crazy.  pretty horrible shit.  Kid was young and alot of upside to his life.  I wish his first year in the bigs would have been better for him since it was his last.  RIP

Re: Taveras Fatally Injured in Accident

Is anyone else praying they don't hear the words "alcohol" or "excessive speeding" in this story as it develops or just me?

I found myself having very little sympathy for Hancock after hearing the details, I'd hate to feel that way about Oscar.

Re: Taveras Fatally Injured in Accident

Based on some of the things I've read about the way people drive in the D.R., I wouldn't be surprised if he was driving too fast on a wet, slippery road. Even still, no 22-year-old deserves to go that way, even if he was driving irresponsibly.

Re: Taveras Fatally Injured in Accident

Taveras was 22 and driving a seemingly new Cardinal red Camaro.  It's almost a certainty he was speeding.  It matters little to me.  It's what 22 year old kids do with their new toys.

Re: Taveras Fatally Injured in Accident

Obviously we don't know Taveras, but judging by his exuberance in the dugout and how he played the game like a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed child, it seems fitting that he had a red Corvette. Of course he had a red Corvette.

Re: Taveras Fatally Injured in Accident

It is part of our nature to expect, wonder and even wish that there is a self induced causes to peoples deaths.  If helps us deal with our own mortality.  We can pretend we are not stupid enough to put ourself in the same situation.  In reality bad shit happens for no reason.  Even if there is a reason it doesnt really matter because we are all dumbfucks at some point in our lives.

I totally understand. Unfortunately life is rarely fair and gives out the things that are deserved. The lady that Leonard Little killed didn't deserve what happened to her either.

I felt terrible for Kile, he had an unknown heart condition that wiped him out. I felt almost nothing for Hancock, other than relief that he didn't kill anyone else as a result of his stupidity. Well, that and outrage that his idiot dad wanted to try to hold everyone in the city legally responsible for his kid.

With Oscar... I know he had a nice shiny red sports car, an 18 year old girlfriend who must have been very beautiful, and now they are both dead. I'm really hoping that I'll feel for him like I do about Kile, and not how I think of Hancock or Little... That's all I'm saying.

Who deserves what, or who does what with their toys doesn't enter into it. There's a percentage of people who die driving, a lot are the result of driver negligence, others are simply the result of random fate (deer, ice slides you through a turn and straight off a hill into a tree, etc). Fate has my sympathy 100%. Driver negligence however doesn't.

If he's driving "typically" for the DR? He has my sympathy. If he's trying to take a 30mph corner at 115mph because he's drunk and he wants to impress his girlfriend? It changes things for him. I'd still feel terrible for her.

I can completely relate.  When I got my job with the police department I was 21, still lived at home and otherwise had no responsibilities.  Shortly after I received my first paycheck, I purchased my first new car--a shiny royal blue high speed Camaro (I read that Taveras was driving a Camaro, not a Corvette, but it really doesn't matter).

I was 21 and possessed a badge that said I was a cop.  Translation--I was invincible.  That car went speeds that US Highways aren't designed for and what's the point of having a car that does that if you aren't going to occasionally find out what it can do.  I was lucky.  I outlived the Camaro and I now drive a Honda.  I now care more about gas mileage than mph.

I have a tough time feeling anything but sorry for Taveras and his girlfriend.  Other than the part about driving on roads in the DR, that could have just as easily been me.

I do feel terrible for him, but that can change for me. Age is often a reflection of stupidity, I get that. Everyone doesn't pay the ultimate price for every bad decision they make. It depends on how stupid it was to me.

Re: Taveras Fatally Injured in Accident

I won't dwell anymore on the accident, rather I'll wonder what could've been if Taveras got to play alongside Albert Pujols. I know Peralta and Jay started to take Taveras under their wing, and those two are great veterans who clearly work hard and go about their business, but I think for someone as young and carefree as Taveras, playing with Pujols would've helped him a lot. Pujols is still larger-than-life in the DR and to the prospects coming up. I think his stature would've been tremendous. Pujols's work ethic and preparation is likely second to none and if Taveras had been around that, I think he would've learned how to get even better.

Re: Taveras Fatally Injured in Accident

Matheny's shortcomings as a game manager are rendered completely unimportant in a moment like this. Let's not ever forget that he's a decent human being.

I was just coming to post that. I make fun of Matheny here and elsewhere a lot, but there's no doubt in my mind that he's a humble, caring person. When there was no statement from Matheny, I assumed that it was because he was too heartbroken to comment.

I was afraid of that.... Rest in peace Oscar. I know everyone has gotten behind the wheel before when a cab was the smart move, and few people have to pay the price you paid. Although I'm not sure I've ever been anywhere near a .287.... To me that goes a little beyond a bad decision and into sheer stupidity. Normally you get arrested for it, not buried. Tragic ending to an otherwise promising life.
