No I believe you're right with recruiting rankings, and they aren't 100% biased.

I just with there was a better measure of how the teams really stack up to each other.

Trying to draw an accurate picture by watching Alabama/LSU or Notre Dame/FSU etc is a really terrible method with a lot of holes.

I'm basically just saying there doesn't seem to be an elite team in the SEC, there hasn't been one in football outside of the SEC for close to 10 years now. It's news however that one may not exist inside the SEC. This could be the second straight title they don't win. There might be riots.

FSU was REALLY good last season.  I don't think there was a team in college football that would have beat them.

You're absolutely right that there isn't an elite team in the SEC right now, and the conference as a whole is down this season because the SEC East is really bad.  I have no idea what happened to South Carolina this season, and Florida still has work to do just to qualify for a bowl game (after not making one last season), as does Tennessee.

Another thing that has hurt the perception of the SEC is the early success of Texas A & M and Mizzou.  I see a lot of people question how 2 "middle of the pack" Big XII teams can suddenly win so many games in the SEC if the conference is so good.  That question overlooks the fact that Texas A & M rode the play of a once-in-a-generation Heisman winning QB, along with the fact that Missouri wasn't really a "middle of the pack" Big XII team.  Missouri had won 48 games in its last 5 seasons in the Big XII, and had won 3 division titles.  Also, aTm's recruiting has gone off the charts since the conference switch.  aTm has become the destination school for Texas kids.  That's huge for their program.

I'm curious if that's going to continue with the playoff. Before I could understand it because you're really wanting the polls to get you into the game. With the top 4 (one probably from the SEC) ranking however, you can be in the Big 12 (TCU or Baylor if perfect from here on will challenge for a spot with or without a Championship game), the Pac 12, the ACC, and still get in if the team gets to the top 4. If they expand that to top 8, I can see it spreading out recruits even more. Now they can really go to top schools in any conference and know they'll have a great chance to make that playoff. Might even play the other way where people magnate to the clearly dominant programs in other conferences to avoid the grind of the SEC schedule.

Florida State coming to mind here. Clearly ahead of everything else in their conference, nearly a guaranteed 1 loss max season, and a power conference title. I can't see people looking anywhere else if they want the best chance for a title.

Re: ASU-Notre Dame

The reasons recruits sign with schools are as varied as the kids themselves.  Certainly some will chase championships, but if there's that much congestion for playing time, that becomes an issue.  Geographic proximity is always a factor, and for some kids the quality of education is important (or maybe I should say that it's important to the recruit's mom, and the recruit doesn't want to piss off his mother).  Quality of the campus and the athletic facilities is also a factor.

The "blue bloods" will always have a recruiting advantage, in significant part because you're talking about 17-18 year old kids.  If you're a football player, who wouldn't want to play at Alabama or Oklahoma or USC or Ohio State.  Unfortunately, it's often too late when they figure out that the Lane Kiffins and Urban Meyers of the world are making the same promises to a couple dozen other players.  Bama is a perfect example--in the last 3 classes they've signed 14 offensive linemen.  Last I checked there are only 5 spots on the line.  Most of those kids were Top 250 caliber players.  They'd probably already be starting at a lot of other schools.

Re: ASU-Notre Dame

I always imagined mostly that national recognition played into that more than anything. The chance to be champions.

With that moving to a less poll dependant system (only 4 teams, but slowly, it's getting there!), I can see that becoming less of a factor. I have never understood how Alabama can land the top 3 prospects who will likely compete for the same position myself. Apparently offensive lineman are just terrible at math
