Interesting. There's been a feeling all along here he's going to re-sign with the Red Sox, thus affirming everyone's presumption that Boston is the most desirable place in the world to live and work, but this is probably going to be his last big contract, so I think he'll go to the highest bidder.

I don't see the Cardinals getting involved at all, but if they were serious, then that would open the door to trade Lance Lynn. A pitcher of his caliber and control years should easily fetch a similar package to the one the Cubs got for Shark.

I agree. This ida seems far fetched. I cant believe it even got started.

I suspect the rumor was floated by Lester's agent. One of the teams interested is the Cubs. What better way to get the Cubs to overspend than to float the idea that the Cardinals are considering Lester for their rotation. No reason for the Cardinals to deny it because it doesn't hurt the Cardinals if the Cubs decide to overspend.

And Lester signs with the Cubs. 6 years, $155M
ESPN announcer to Tim Kurkjian- How did the Cubs get this done?
Kurkjian: Well, they offered about $20M more than any other team.
Overspending for talent. A Chicago tradition.

I really domt understand why you trade pitching then overpay for it. Lester is a for real top of the rotation pitcher. He is going to cost the cardinals some wins.

and it begins. Rival board posters are saying the 106 year (or whatever it is now) wait may be over. Lester is the missing piece.
I'm a Blues fan, and it took me one series against the San Jose Sharks after we won the Presidents trophy for me to realize I shouldn't go ape-shit running my mouth with a cursed team until they break the curse.
At this point I actually feel sorry for Chicago, they haven't been good in a long time.

"Rival board posters are saying the 106 year (or whatever it is now) wait may be over."
Geez, it's so unlike CubFan to overreact.
Look, Lester is a nice snag. He's a top of the rotation pitcher who makes them better. But let's not pretend this is the Braves adding Greg Maddux in '93. The Cubs still have issues. Their shortstop is a dog. Their second baseman is a shortstop who would have struck out 300 times if he had played a full season. Until Bryant hits in the major leagues, he's still a prospect. Their outfield is interesting, but, again, let's see how it holds up over 162 games. And they still don't have a 20-game winner in their rotation, and after they traded James Russell last year, their best lefty in the bullpen was Wesley Wright.
So as much as their legion of B- and C- list celebrity fans and the media will try to convince everyone that the 2015 Cubs are for real, let's wait to see how they play on the field,

I'm definitely buying into their improvement, but more interesting will be how tanking for three seasons, throwing money at Cuban players and picking in the top of the draft proves once again that Theo is awesome. I was hoping that idea would die when most of his handiwork was shipped out to Los Angeles.
