Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

"Im sort of suprised about the market on sandoval."

Well, it only takes one stupid general manager to skew the market, and this year it's Ben Cherington. Funny how a last place finish will alter your perception about building through the draft. Last year, the Red Sox were so adamant and righteous about not paying money to players who are over 30. Now they're going to sign Hanley and pick up Hamels' option if he waives his no trade clause.

I don't know about Ludwick. He'd be a great guy to have in the clubhouse, but I'm not sure how much he has left. He's an old 36 and he hasn't really played anywhere but left field in four years, so I just don't see much of a role for him.

Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

The risk you take with Sandoval is his weight.  The guy is always out of shape, and as a result, prone to injury.  In his contract year, he managed to play 157 games (go figure).  But he averaged 122 games/season for the 3 years before that.

And think of all the buffets he can eat at with $95M.  I'm glad he's out of the NL, but I'm also glad the Cardinals aren't the ones on the hook for 5 years.

"And think of all the buffets he can eat at with $95M."

I'm assuming the restaurants in San Francisco are better than they are here. Unless he's partial to a buffet that consists of boiled meat and 17 different varieties of potatoes, he's going to lose weight.

Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

The bullpen makeover continues. I'm not sure Busch III is one of the most pitcher-friendly parks, as the article suggests, but I will agree with the notion he's better off in St. Louis than Denver.

Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

And Descalso was non-tendered, according to the P-D. I know he isn't Robby Alomar, but I liked him.

"infielder Daniel Descalso, who has been on four league championship series teams and two World Series clubs with the Cardinals in his four full big-league seasons, was not tendered a 2015 contract and immediately became a free agent, the club announced late Tuesday night.Descalso, 28, made $1.29 million last season as a first-time arbitration-eligible player.
The Cardinals apparently did not want to pay him twice as much or more as a second-time arbitration-eligible player, especially because he again would be used mostly in a reserve role, either as a pinch hitter or defender.
The Cardinals did tender 2015 contracts to five other arbitration-eligible players — 15-game winner Lance Lynn, center fielder Jon Jay, backup catcher Tony Cruz, Walden and backup outfielder Peter Bourjos.Descalso appeared in 44 postseason games for the Cardinals in the last four seasons, although he got only two hitless at-bats in the nine postseason games the Cardinals played this year.
After batting just .182 in the first half last season, Descalso helped the Cardinals down the stretch by hitting .315 in the second half to finish at .242, which was one point under his career average. A third-round pick by the club in 2007, Descalso became the first Cardinal to start at a different infield position every game in a four-game stretch from Aug. 30-Sept. 1. He also made his pitching debut last season, retiring the only hitter he faced in a blowout loss May 12.
The lefthanded-hitting Descalso’s spot here was complicated by the fact that the Cardinals signed lefthanded-hitting infielder Dean Anna as a free agent last month and also acquired switch-hitting infielder Ty Kelly from the Seattle Mariners. In addition, lefthanded-hitting infielder Greg Garcia returns, as does righthanded-hitting infielder Pete Kozma.
The Cardinals’ 40-man winter roster stands at 37 after the signing of Belisle. Belisle, 6 feet 4 inches and 225 pounds, was 4-7 with a 4.87 earned-run average in 66 games for the Rockies last season. He has a career mark of 48-54 and 4.41 ERA in 524 games (724 1/3 innings pitched) with Cincinnati (2003, 2005-08) and Colorado (2009-14). Belisle has made 70 or more relief appearances in four of the last five seasons, including a National League-leading 80 in 2012.
According to Fox Sports, Belisle can make as much as $4 million if he achieves appearance incentives.

Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

Imo descalso is better then anything they replaced him with from a offensive standpoint.  His drawback is not being a backup ss.

Carpenter is who I thought Descalso would be. That guy just shredded Double-A.

Neshek to the Astros for 2 years, $12 million, with an option for a third year.

Mark reynolds isnt the best mlb player in the world but he isnt to bad as ur 25 man either.  He adds power.  This team needs that and it might help keep teams honest when facing the better lefties in the lineup.

They're getting hammered by the local press because they lost Lester, and they're panicking. They're claiming Porcello is a #2 when he's never been more than a 3/4, and Wade Miley isn't much more than a 4/5 guy. If Masterson's problems last year were really all about his knee and he comes into camp healthy, then this could end up working out, but right now Cherington is throwing money around like a drunk at a strip joint during a bachelor party.

If he can still play third even a little bit, he's worth considering, but if he's only limited to first, I think I'd probably pass. I've heard worse ideas, though.

No chance I'm getting interested in baseball with the world series just ending a few weeks ago. Wake me up when catchers and pitchers report. I have college football and a hockey season to pay attention to instead.

Reynolds played 42 games last season at 3B, starting 29 of them.  His advanced fielding metrics graded him pretty well at third.

I haven't seen terms yet, but pending a physical, Reynolds is a Cardinal.

Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

Gutted may be a little strong, but losing Latos will hurt them.  Assuming health, the Reds will still have a rotation of Cueto, Bailey, Leake, Cingrani and #5.  That isn't terrible, but it's certainly weaker without Latos.

Then it's not a bad move. He can give Adams and Carpenter enough days off to make it worthwhile. As far the terms are concerned, I hope it's a 1-year contract, in case he Wiggintons on the Cardinals.

I'm not sure you can assume health and consistency from any of the four they have left. As much as I think Simon's first half of 2014 was an outlier, he will take the ball every time you want to give it to him. I have no idea what the Reds got back from the Tigers, but they certainly sold high on him.
If Fernandez and Latos are healthy (again recognizing that's not always been the case), the Marlins suddenly could have a formidable team. They'll screw it up eventually, but right now they might be right behind Washington in that division in terms of talent.

I suspect the Reds will go "all in" to keep Cueto, which prompted them to trade Latos now.  The Bailey contract was a mistake, but they're stuck with that and they have to hope for the best.  I know nothing specifically about the players the Reds got in either trade, but ESPN seemed to suggest they did pretty well in the trade with Detroit.

Agree with you on the Marlins.  It's tough to expect Fernandez to be his old self immediately after TJ surgery, but a top 2 of Fernandez and Latos, if healthy, is pretty darn good.

But 10millions dollars?  That cant be market.  Neshek was overpaid as well.

I thought i remember him being a poor defender.  Not sure why i thought that tho.  It really doesnt matter if he can play third because MM will never give Carp a day off.

One thing he could do is rotate carp to second when wong has days off.  Basicly reynolds could sub for 1st, 2nd and third that way.

At 2 million dollars he is a steal.

Re: Off Season Crap 2014-2015

I suspect the Reynolds deal pretty much finishes the Cardinals' off-season.  Their roster should be pretty much completed.

If there's one thing I think they're missing, it's a reliable guy off the bench who can deliver a hit.  I assume the bench will be Cruz, Reynolds, Kozma/Anna, Bourjos and Grichuk.  Reynolds and Grichuk provide power.  Bourjos and Kozma provide defense.  But in a situation where you just need a single to tie the game, none of those guys instills much confidence.
