Ahhh, the benefits of owning a baseball team in a 1-newspaper town ...

In many ways, I think owning the Cardinals in the present invites scrutiny that only the Yankees and maybe Red Sox face. If the Cardinals miss the playoffs, I would expect this city to hit the fainting couch. The last time the Cardinals missed the playoffs, Sam Bradford was a rookie and the city was distracted enough to pay attention to the Rams. If that happens this year, the P-D site will have a lot of outages.

DeWitt is fine. I was being critical of Bernie.

After winning three championships in 10 years, Henry, Warner and Lucchino are bulletproof here. Shaughnessy tries to troll them once in awhile, but it usually ends up blowing back in his face. Twenty years ago, people would have been jumping off bridges if the Red Sox finished last in their division, but last year people mostly took the "Aw, they'll fix it next season ..." attitude.

I think teying is the most important thing. As a fan i can watch a team that has direction even if they are not going to make the playoffs. There just has to be some hope. I cant really remember a season as a cardinals fan that there was zero hope.

The late '80s/early '90s were rough, and McGwire's HR exploits carried us through some otherwise unexciting years in '98 and '99, but you're right. There haven't been any seasons since '99 when the Cardinals went into Spring Training with no realistic hope of making the playoffs.

Wherever Max is, I hope he enjoyed the Model Franchise getting spanked by a Division II team.

Joe Strauss takes a shot at the Phils:He can't market him at all. At some point the Phillies need to view the contract as dead money and move on. Remember that it was Howard's contract extension that in my opinion made it virtually impossible that the Cardinals would retain Pujols. It couldn't be written locally, of course, because of Howard's St. Louis ties, but his contract was one of the most absurd in the game's history. There was no way the Cardinals could top its AAV long term for Pujols. Then Howard, a slow-moving baserunner and a defensive liability, ruptures his Achilles on the final swing of the 2011 NLDS before the extension even takes effect. I recall Mozeliak's take: "Just because someone else does a terrible contract doesn't mean I have to as well." Look at the direction of both franchises since.
