Wainwright spent part of his offseason in Honduras building a clean water project. I only put this here because it never fails to amaze me how humble he is.
Hopefully he didn't give himself a hernia. He's headed back to St. Louis due to abdominal pain
The Cardinals crack medical staff will diagnose him as pregnant. But the good news is he's in his third trimester, so he'll be available to pitch around May 1.

Here is the annual spring training minor/season ending injury.

I wonder if Jonny Gomes will be able to work up a second verse of "Wainwright is Gone."

This ab pain will result in Tommy John surgery... The only thing I've come to have faith in when the Cardinals talk about injuries is that if it's being discussed, it's severe and season ending....

If this isn't a big deal, why are they sending him to St. Louis?. Aren't there doctors in Florida who can just as easily tell him to lay low for a couple of days? There must be doctors in Florida, because that's where old people go to die.
The Phillies' price for Cole Hamels just got a whole lot more attractive. And likely more expensive.

After he fails to respond after the 4-5 rest period, he'll have season-ending surgery to remove his duodenum.

I get the feeling the doctor who looked at Wainwright said "you have a good head on your... *checks medical book* shoulders."

Ozzie wasnt really a wizzard at the plate but he might not be a bad gu for kozma to learn off of. He was a defensive minded shortstop that managed to hit enought to make the HOF. If Kozma could hit .260 like ozzie did, or ever .250, he would be in the league a very long time. Ryan is still playing is the majors with far less.

I had forgotten Kozma was still in the organization. Kudos to him for seeking advice from a Hall of Famer, but asking Ozzie Smith for hitting tips is kind of like going to Tony La Russa for legal help. Yeah, he's a lawyer, but it's not what he's really known for.

I could see kozma being in the mix. He is out of option i believ, so he will have to make the 25 man to be a factor. The new infielders sound sort of arron mileish.

I think Kozma was out of options last year and cleared waivers.

Looking at the roster, they don't really have a backup shortstop. Ty Kelly supposedly can hit a little bit, but he's a 2B/3B type, and Dean Anna is a career minor leaguer who isn't going to excite anyone. I'd assume they'd certainly rather see Diaz last at least one more year in the minors than spend a season in St. Louis backing up Peralta. You think Mark Reynolds could play short?

I dunno guys, I think we're underrating Ozzie's offense. He turned himself into a decent hitter, and the best coaches were rarely, if ever, great players. I don't think that necessarily means Ozzie can turn Kozma into an above-average player, but there are definitely worse coaches he could lean on.

Agreed. His hitting was a joke early in his career, and people were very concerned that STL had gotten the worst of that deal. As years went by, he became less and less of a liability at the plate and ended up as, dare I say, an offensive asset. Seems to me Kozma needs to find the same path.

Does that mean they can bounce him around all they want until he is a FA?

I think he is a great guy for kozma to learn from. A decent hitter can probably teach a shitty hitter like kozma how to improve better then a great hitter. Ozzie was likely a shitty hitter himself that was able to max his potential to decent level. That is exactly what kozma should shoot for.

It was supposed to be. I'm going to be optimistic about the Reynolds signing. I think they got him for one year on some pretty short money. For years, we've been pining for the Cardinals to get a right-handed power hitter who can give them some pop off the bench. If Reynolds can give them 15-18 HRs as a pinch-hitter/first baseman who spells Adams against lefties, then he'll be worth it.
To answer your question directly, no, I really don't see much of a role for Reynolds at shortstop.

No, I believe he'd have to clear waivers again.

Idk much about reynolds. Thats why i asked. I didnt really follow him in arizona. From what i remember he was closer to adam dunn the scott rolen. A lumbering ox. However reports from stl media have him as a decent fielder.

I haven't followed Reynolds too much recently, but he was fairly athletic when he first came up to the big leagues. He stole over 20 bases one year.

Derrick Goold:
QUESTION: Is Peter Bourjos the only utility player that could conceivably win a starting position job this spring, even if unlikely?GOOLD: No. Mark Reynolds could at first base.FOLLOW-UP: I'm surprised to hear you say Reynolds could win the 1B job. Would you platoon Adams and Reynolds, with the latter getting majority of the starts?GOOLD: Mark Reynolds has hit 20 or more homers in eight consecutive seasons. He has been a starter for a big-league team before. He can have a strong swing, enter the year on a hot streak, and absolutely be the starter. Stranger things have happened than a major-leaguer with starting experience winning a starting job.
