Re: Spring Training Crap

I am not in favor of reynolds doing more then platooning at first.  I still like adams.  As far as bourjos, maybe.  Is there anyway heyward could play center full time?

He's only started 22 games in center.  Who would you put in RF if Heyward played CF?

Grichuk is a pretty good right fielder.  Piscotty idk about but ive not heard that he is horrible.  Reynolds doesnt have alot of time in the outfield at all.  That might be a reach but in recent years cardinals fans have seen beltran and berkman in right field.  They are just options i wonder about because i see another weak hitting team shaping up.  I dont like to see 8 guy swing for the fence but my idea of a good inning isnt a 3 singles, one run and a GIDP?

Good for him that he's made it back to the majors when he could have packed it in, but I hope he gets some starts against the Cardinals.

We'll know he's completely lost it when Mike Lincoln makes the Reds...oh wait, he did.

Well, if he REALLY pined for those mid-2000s teams, Ludwick and Skip would start...crap, that happened.

I bet he won't sign Randy Keisler.

I wasn't referring to their defense, I was talking about the offense.  Grichuck and Reynolds are both "all or nothing" hitters.  Reynolds obviously has had more success in the big leagues, but he's a career .229 hitter who averages 203 strikeouts for every 162 games he plays.  Piscotty isn't a power hitter, he hit 9 HR last season at AAA.

Offense is down across baseball.  The major league batting average (.251) was the lowest its been since 1972.  The Cardinals finished 9th in the NL in runs scored a year after finishing first.  Everyone knew they couldn't repeat 2013's RISP production, but the reality probably lies somewhere in the middle.

Having Mark Reynolds play everyday doesn't make the offense better.  It might be exciting the 20 or so times he hits a HR, but it'd be pretty darn frustrating the rest of his at bats.

Walt still thinks it's 2004.  On the bright side, Joey Votto is entering year 2 of his 10 year contract extension.  Last year he drove in fewer runs that Bourjos.

Better yet, trade him to the Reds and let Walt give him the extension.

Grichuk is 23...id hope he improves on his approach.  VEB had a good write up on how he should season alittle more in triple A.  I agree on reynolds.  I dont want him playing everyday.  I do know how things work tho.  Before you know it jay will be in the pits, heyward will be hitting a soft .270 and we all will be reaching for a solution.  Thats the way a season goes.

Re: Spring Training Crap

I like Grichuk, but at some point, you have to accept that a hitter is what he is.  Grichuk his .256 in a full season at AA in 2013, and he hit .259 in nearly a full season of AAA last season.  Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't know that you can suddenly turn him into a .280 hitter.

Jon Jay isn't an All-Star, but he's a more than serviceable player.  He's averaged near .300 for 4 full seasons with an OBP of .360+.  He plays good defense, but with a noodle arm.  He isn't going to hit 10 HRs, but he does a lot of things that help this team win ballgames.

Bottom line is if you're looking for this team to hit 150 HRs, it just isn't.  If everything (and I mean everything) falls into place perfectly, I think the best you can expect is 20 from Holliday, Adams, Peralta and Heyward, 15 from Molina and Wong, 10 from Carpenter and 5 from Jay.  That's 125 HR under ideal circumstances.

FWIW, I agree with what VEB wrote about Grichuk.  I think the 2015 are a better team with Grichuk in AAA rather than the major league roster.  If Grichuk is on the team, the bench looks something like Reynolds, Grichuk, Cruz, Kozma/Kelly/Anna and Bourjos.  That isn't very good.  There are a couple of guys there who can potentially hit a HR off the bench, but if the team just needs a hit, there isn't a good option.  I'd much rather have Piscotty or Pham, both of whom are better hitters, and either of whom might deliver a key single when the team needs one.

Re: Spring Training Crap

I wouldnt over look the purpose of hitting the ball over the fence.  If this team turns into 2014 all over again getting reynolds in the lineup maybe important.  If a team is already getting nothing over and over again it doesnt hurt to give an all or nothing player some starts.  You might get lucky and get the all part.  I dont expect reynolds to make 50 starts.  More like 20 tops.  If matheny is smart enough to put reynolds in the lineup against pitchers he can hit 20 usefull starts should be simple.  Also there is several left handed batters he can replace.  Jay or heyward being 2 of those if reynolds can play the outfield and heyward can spot start in center.  It is just a matter of timing, who is pitch and who is swing a hot bat that alters my opinion.

Grichuk becoming a .280 hitter isnt that far fetched.  Molinas BA was likely lower then grichuk at the age of 23.  Alot of future mlb players are not in triple a, let alone the majors at 23.  Who knows what will happen with him but he needs at bats.  Those wont come at the major league level.

Im for giving kozma the bench spot.  I believe the other guys have minor league contracts.  You can always ditch kozma later.  The 25th man doesnt have alot of barring on game in the first month of the season, normally.

Fair enough, but Reynolds isn't going to make a significant impact in 20 starts.  You were talking about Reynolds hitting 20 HR.  He hit 22 HRs last season, but that was in 130 games (103 starts) and 433 plate appearances.  That's my issue.  I don't have a problem if Reynolds gets 25-30 starts.  I don't want to see him get 100+ because I think the bad outweighs the good in that scenario.

Re: Spring Training Crap

I think the more Reynolds plays, the worse off they'll be, because it means someone has gotten hurt or has been wildly ineffective.
I like Grichuk. Some of his tools need some polish, of course, but he gives you a decent bat off the bench, and his defense is excellent.

FWIW- I traded texts with Chad last night and he said yesterday was the most effortless Martinez has ever looked. Said he appears more focused than years past. Hopefully a good sign for the Cards.

Re: Spring Training Crap

Driving to Key Largo for some diving, we take off Tuesday. We'll stop Wednesday in Kissimmee to see the Braves Cards and then on the way back we'll hit Jupiter for the Cards Twins game.

We'll also do 2600 miles of driving, and 8 dives out of Key Largo

Should be a great time, my first spring training games!
