At this point, it sounds like Garcia is the default 5th starter if for no other reasons than he gets paid a lot more money and he can't pitch out of the bullpen.
Offline
I think those are factors, but he's also pitched pretty well. It seems like they really didn't anticipate getting anything from him.

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply he hadn't pitched well. But I think Martinez came into camp with the 5th starter's spot in hand, and he really hasn't done much to lose it outside of one bad inning.

Oh yeah, agreed.

I think the club is doing the safest thing. I dont see how the club can lose a guy who gets paid as well as garcia or with as much potential talent as him. It does suck carlos keeps getting pushed back. However i dont think the club wants either of there starters in waiting to throw 200 innings his year. Im sure over the course of 162 games both with make some starts and id bet one of them is in the 5 man rotation by the all star break.

Tsunamy still has to prove he can get out lefthanded hitters. Until then, he's a bullpen guy.

One good thing about this boring spring is that no matter who is the 5th starter i wont be disappointed.

I watched some of yesterday's game. Even with the addition of Heyward, the team strikes me as being very similar to last year's. We're going to be looking at a lot of 2-1 and 3-2 games.
Kozma is hitting something like .450 and both Hrabosky and McLaughlin are convinced he's earned a spot on the team. He's like the Shingles. They can't get rid of him.

Looks like Garcia is already in season form.

Villanueva has made the team. Staff is shaping up as:
SP: Wainwright, Lynn, Wacha, Lackey
RP: Rosenthal, Walden, Maness, Belisle, Villanueva, Choate, Siegrist
Bubble: Garcia, Martinez, Gonzales
IF: Adams, Reynolds, Carpenter, Peralta, Wong, Kozma
OF: Holliday, Heyward, Jay, Bourjos, Grichuk
C: Molina, Cruz

Sounds like Martinez has the fifth starter spot wrapped up with Garcia's injury and Villanueva's addition to the roster.

It looks like Siegrist is at least resembling his 2013 version, which I assume is what made Freeman expendable. I would have preferred a lefty duo of Siegrist and Freeman over Siegrist and Choate.

I think he's definitely made the team because there's no other shortstop and he's out of options. I doubt he would pass through waivers.

I dont have am issue with the roster. I could argue with this or that but when the debate is over the 24 or 25th spot and the difference in players is so minor it is a mute point. I think the team is also making decisions it can change its mind on. If you put kozma on the mlb roster he can always be cut. If you cut him you have lost him. It isnt like they are blocking a minor leaguer. Kozma might get 10 at bats the first month.

It's a shame La Russa never really gave Tyler Greene the shot he deserved. He'd be a 30/30 guy by now.

Fuckin' La Russa was just holding him back.

An indication of how bad that team is going to be. They'll be fighting the Brewers for 4th place.

Agreed. I have no idea what Walt is doing.

It's good to know if this whole St. Louis Cardinal fan thing blows up on us, we can always be Reds fans. How many former Cardinals are they playing with now?

I had to look it up. Here's a list of the former Cardinals that Walt has hired since he got to Cincinnati:
Skip Schumaker
Jason Marquis
Ryan Ludwick
Ceasr Izturis
Scott Rolen
Miguel Cairo
Edgar Renteria
Jim Edmonds
Mike Lincoln
Russ Springer
Cement Head

Too bad Max isn't here to explain it to you.
