4/27 Gamecrap

Let's get sidetracked by what the Cardinals should do to replace Wainwright. Goold wondered aloud if there would be interest in a reunion with Kyle Lohse. I'm sure people will take one look at his numbers and freak out about that possibility, but I think that would be the best high-floor move they could make until we get closer to the trade deadline and Mozeliak has to assess which direction to go in. Lohse has allowed an unnaturally high number of fly balls to leave the yard, so I think he's still the same back-end rotation guy he's been the last two years.

Lohse would give the Cardinals Wainwright's innings. He'd take the pressure off trying to get Gonzales AND Martinez pitching through an entire season. Do you want Lohse as your No. 1 starter going into the playoffs? Hell no. But the Cardinals aren't going to have the luxury of taking a vaunted ace like Wainwright into the playoffs this year (if they get there). Maybe Lance Lynn will grow a pair of testicles between now and October. Michael Wacha asserted himself pretty damn well as a rookie, so if he's healthy, maybe he's that guy.

Re: 4/27 Gamecrap

For now I think they're right to stand pat. They'll get by until Gonzales is healthy and then it will be his job. We'll continue to hear about Garcia until his arm finally falls off, but if they're lucky enough to get a couple of starts from him, that's fine too.

Around July is where things will get interesting.  Assuming Gonzales is the 5th starter, 3/5 of the rotation will have never pitched a full major league season, and you could see that start to take a toll. Lohse or something along those lines would be a much better option than going after Cole Hamels or some other top of the rotation guy.  Joe Strauss may think the Cardinals should blow things up, but I strongly disagree.

Re: 4/27 Gamecrap

Hey, remember when the Red Sox were going to blaze this bold new trail of not having any top-shelf starters and throwing a bunch of back-end to mid rotation guys out there?

Joe Kelly - 4.08 ERA
Rick Porcello - 6.48 ERA
Wade Miley - 8.62 ERA
Clay Buchholz - 4.84 ERA
Justin Masterson - 5.16 ERA

Re: 4/27 Gamecrap

Schilling and Kruk both agreed last night that the Cardinals should/would inquire with the Phillies about Hamels. It's an expensive option, but the only one right now that can be had. If they wait, there may be some pretty good rentals out there, depending upon what the standings look like this summer.
I agree with Fors that right now they'll try to make do with what they have. The early indication is the division isn't shaping up as tough as originally thought.

The problem with going after Hamels is that the asking price will include either Martinez or Gonzales, plus several other prospects.  I understand the logic that Hamels replaces Wainwright, and its easier to replace a back of the rotation pitcher, but the move also ties up a lot of money that this team is going to need to invest in offense in the years to come.

Re: 4/27 Gamecrap

I don't think the money is the concern so much as the asking price is Carlos Martinez. I don't want to overreact to three starts, but if the Cardinals are going to include him in a trade, I want it to be for someone who can hit.

Re: 4/27 Gamecrap

I'm not trading Carlos Martinez for anyone not named after a species of fish. What the hell. The Angels seem to be giving away outfielders today, so why not give them a call?

Artie always said Joe Kelly could be a top-of-the-rotation pitcher.

You're willing to trade C-Mart for Mike Carp?

Should have thought that through a little bit better, right?

Re: 4/27 Gamecrap

There's a surprising number of players with names related to Fish.

I'd like to hear the reasoning behind batting Adams fourth against Hamels.

Villanueva should be used in two situations - when the ace of the staff suddenly rips his Achilles' tendon and the team needs a couple of emergency innings, and in extra innings after every other pitcher in the bullpen has already pitched.

I said the same thing to myself, but I didn't post it at the time because I wanted to appear humble.

Perhaps I should have limited my suggestion to a species of fish containing five letters.

{Now you're going to tell me there's a guy out there named "Perch" who is hitting .350 in the California Penal League.}

I was wondering how much his hand was shaking when he wrote out a lineup with Holliday in left and Reynolds in right.

Re: 4/27 Gamecrap

In hindsight, I'm thinking the Cardinals wish they had flipped Adams after 2013. He looks like a mess on offense and defense.

Wow, that was some awful base running.

On the crawl, there's a report the Packers are retiring Brett Favre's number on Thanksgiving. I hope this means he's also retiring from doing those amateurish commercials for those copper bands that don't work.
