McCarver is fucked in the head. I agree a bunt in the first inning isn't necessarily a bad idea, but nt when you've got a pitcher making his major league debut on the mound. Does Sandberg think this is going to be a 1-0 game?

College baseball is hideous.

It's become this hybrid thing that's somewhere between the old Gorilla Ball and real baseball. They should just switch to wood at this point and stop dicking around with the tin bats. The argument has always been about the cost of wood bats, but a top of the line metal bat these days is between $300-$400. And it's not like these D1 teams in the power conferences are hurting for cash.

AFAIK Missouri's American Legion teams can't use them anymore. They still use them during the high school season, but from what I've seen in the past few years, kids can't hit. And their fundamentals are shit.

In typically indecisive fashion, the MIAA has let the individual leagues decide if they will allow metal bats. But the state tournament is wood only. This, obviously, creates a couple of unique dynamics. You've got teams using metal during the regular season that have to suddenly convert to wood in the post-season, often with dramatic results. Then there are the occasional non-league games between one team in a metal bat league and another team in a wood bat league. You can practically see the kids on the team in the wood bat league drooling as they reach into their bat bags for their long lost metal bats.
There is, of course, a greed component. The principal proponent of metal bats in this state is a revered high school coach with more than 700 career wins who - surprise, surpirse - gets an endorsement check from Easton. I'd like to talk to the guy once and ask him how he feels about all the pitchers who have suffered serious injuries from line drives off metal bats, or all the young arms that have been ruined by throwing too many pitches because the metal bats are so much easier to hit with.

The only argument I could understand for the continued use of metal bats is the cost, since it might start getting expensive for kids to replace broken bats. However, they are instruments of destruction and I'd prefer kids learn to use wood. Then again, I've become a cranky old man on youth sports.

Has there ever been a study done to see how much it would cost. Id think that would be the first place to start. I also would think they could get a cut rate deal. Im sure companies would be in a bidding war to provide bats to every division one school.

A top quality ash bat is about $75, and a good maple bat will run you about $125. A high end metal bat is around $400, so wood is going to be more expensive unless you get remarkably lucky and don't break a lot of wood bats.
The problem with merchandise contracts is hitters tend to be not only brand loyal, but they're also anal about the model and size. When I was in a wood-bat league, I always used Louisville Slugger bats, Pro Stock, ash, 34-inch, 31-ounce, with a cup barrel. I wasn't as picky about metal bats, but I liked the Easton brand, because they seemed to be lighter and the barrel seemed fatter.
It's like the way people used to buy cars 50 years ago. My grandmother always drove a Buick, because she always drove a Buick. Chevys were too working class, Oldsmobiles were too big, and Cadillacs were too ostentatious. And you didn't drive a Pontiac unless you were a hippie or heavily-medicated. I remember when my dad one day came home with a brand now '69 GTO convertible and my grandmother asked him what she had done wrong as a parent.
