Huh. And I figured that sort of mentality was more of a Midwestern thing.

It's very much a baseball thing. Almost without exception, hitters are slaves to consistency. If they're going well, they won't want to change a thing. If I was in the middle of a hot streak at the plate, I didn't want to even take batting practice. I didn't want to waste any good swings in the cage.
Conversely, pitchers will try anything new, even when they're going well. I was constantly experimenting with change-up grips, slider grips, split-finger pitches, even a screwball, but my hands are too small to command any of them worth a damn. I was only ever a 2-pitch pitcher, which is why I never amounted to anything more than a left-handed specialist at a Div.3 school in an area of the country where the college baseball season lasts about eight weeks.
