Matheny took a lot of heat for bitching about playing on Sunday nights, but it's asking a lot of these guys to get on a plane at 1 a.m., fly halfway across the country, losing an hour, and then be sharp for a game against Matt Harvey that ends up going 14 innings.
To your point, you either have to start or end the season later or reduce the number of games. The owners will never agree to the latter, so you're either going to have to start the season in late March, or play World Series games in November.
 

Right. And I thought it was unfair that Matheny caught heat because the issue is real. Maybe there were mid-May nights in 1999 or 2000 when 12 of the 14 teams playing that day scored fewer than four runs and six of the seven games came in on the under, but I doubt it.

The further we get from the Steroid Era the clearer it gets to me that taking away uppers has exposed what a grind the schedule is. The Harveys, Klubers and Kershaws and no-name relievers throwing 95 mph has definitely reduced offense, as has the decline of guys pumping themselves full of horse pills, but the Cardinals are in the midst of playing their 27th game in the past 28 days. I don't care if you're a super athlete with the best nutrionists and wellness experts by your side -- these guys are already worn down. Obviously they're good enough to rebound and find second, third and fourth winds, but there are too many nights where offense in MLB is non-existent.

And you are of course correct about the conundrum of the schedule. I don't know what the right answer is.
