Re: 5/23 GC

The Royals are a much, much better team than the Cardinals. I can't believe I'm saying that about a team managed by Ned Yost.

Re: 5/23 GC

With the Cardinals delayed, let me give everyone an update on my weekend. Things started OK, our team led the first game 3-1 after an inning. We're now in the 4th game and have been outscored 60-0 since that first inning.

After losing game one 11-3, the lesbians' daughter started game 2. She's not a great pitcher, but her bigger problem is if any batted ball hits anything other than her glove she's instantly too hurt to play. Of course, she takes a one-hopper off her side and is done. We were playing our second game in a row, and it was 2:00 in the afternoon. It was about 80 degrees, certainly warm, but not uncomfortable. An inning after the pitcher goes down, another girl decides she over-heated. Not surprisingly, watching their friends quit caused the rest of them to shut down and they've been toast ever since.

And I can't have a friggin beer because the ball park doesn't allow alcohol. If someone asked me to try an experimental acupuncture treatment in my eyes, I would gladly volunteer.

It sounds like whatever you've spent on this trip could've been put to better use for a family getaway to the Lake. Or a Burger King in Lemay. Anything but this.

The best part is the delusional parents. Early yesterday, it was just that the girls weren't playing hard enough and would have won these games with more effort. By the end of the day it was the other teams had stacked their teams (some of which might be true, otherwise these are the biggest 11-13 year old girls I've ever seen) and the whole thing wasn't fair. There was actually a parents vote on whether or not we even bother playing today. Great message to send, when life gets tough or unfair, just quit. Those who wanted to play outvoted those who wanted to quit.

During the parent meeting last night the coach actually turned to me and asked if I had anything to add. I took a few minutes to speak about the parents' behavior (without naming names) and suggested the girls were trying their best and it probably didn't help when parents (2 in particular) are yelling at their kid after every pitch. I almost cited the Matheny Manifesto. We'll see how that goes today. At least I'll be headed home in 5 hours.

Same, I was thinking how spectacular Royals SS play was/is.

The parents who voted to quit should have their children taken away from them.

No one specifically voted to quit. The coach asked how many wanted to keep playing and had a more than enough. But not every hand went up.

Today was much better. We lost both games, but the scores were 4-2 and 7-3. It was drama-free until the end. We were down 6-3 and had the bases loaded. The daughter of the mom who fancies herself the "team mom" struck out to end the inning and threw a fit. When the mom who keeps the scorebook to relax and keep her head in the game. That sent the daughter, Cheyenne (which probably tells you all you need to know about the family) into tears. Her mom, Melissa starts screaming at the scorekeeper, Sandy for making Cheyenne cry which caused another mom to sit down, keep quiet and let the bench handle it.

I love girls softball. We're back in Illinois. Only 2.5 hours left until we're home.

Madison finished the weekend 2 for 6 with a walk. She also made a really nice catch down the left field line on a ball that would have scored 3 if she'd have missed it. That what I love about my kids. They don't care about the BS, they just play as hard as they can.

Cheyenne? Dear god, are they allowing kids from Jefferson County to participate?

(No offense if you have family from JeffCo)

Worse, they're from Bonne Terre.

Artie you won't be able to fully appreciate it, but Bonne Terre is in St. Francois County which is pronounced St "Francis" County

Re: 5/23 GC

No way. Who has the time, money and patience to make a 2.5 hour trip from Bonne freaking Terre for competitive softball? This is insanity.

Re: 5/23 GC

Bonne Terre isn't that far south--it's probably an hour south of St. Louis. Team practices are in Imperial, which means we're traveling as far south as Melissa and Cheyenne come north. Right now we're playing league games at Kirkwood, so that's closer to us, but we'll soon be switching to Affton.

One of my complaints has been that the girls are too spread out. 4 of the girls are up by us in northwest St. Louis County. A handful are from the Festus/Imperial area, and the rest are from even further south. There's no chance this team sticks together. I'm just waiting for it to end.

Re: 5/23 GC

You're correct. I had forgotten it's not far off of 55.
