Watching a slo-mo replay I was struck by the angle of his head on a pitch tailing down and in. I'm going to wade in with my usual un-researched opinion and say the combination of a more closed stance and that face guard makes it harder to pick up the inside pitches. Whether it's fear of getting hit or a conscious effort to handle outside stuff, who knows?, but I'm guessing the latter.
