Previous at bat. His single in the seventh was a two-hopper up the middle.

Sorry. You're correct. The single in the seventh was off the wall, and his single in the ninth was a two-hopper to the right of second base. And that single in the seventh was one of the hardest-hit baseballs I've ever seen. Granted, you don't want to make an out at second base leading off an inning when you're behind by four runs and you've got Heyward's arm to think about, but it got out to right field so fast there wasn't really much of a question about whether he was going to stretch it into a double.

OK, that's the one I remembered.  The radio guys said the Cardinals almost caught Stanton trying to get back to first base.

If I remember correctly, Garcia fell behind Ozuna before getting him out, then gave up the single before getting the last 2 outs.  I just remember Horton thinking Garcia seemed to be laboring a bit, and me finding it odd that the only person warming up was Choate.

If he was a great player it would've been a home run.

The attempt to throw behind him at first base wasn't all that close. It was mostly notable for Reynolds' willingness to try to block the bag. That takes a little courage.
As for warming up only Choate, Jennings had double-switched Deitrich into the game when he removed Latos, so the first three batters in the eighth were lefties (Deitrich, Gordon, Itchy) he wasn't going to pinch-hit for. In any event, the idea that Choate is also capable of getting out righthanded hitters, which was promoted at the beginning of last year, isn't even a consideration anymore. As soon as there was a hint of a righty was coming to the plate, he went to Maness.

The Miami TV guys were going over the statistical discrepancies between Giancarlo and the rest of the team last night. He's hit 44 percent of their home runs and driven in 26 percent of their runs. Those are Ruthian ratios. The guys with the next-highest numbers are Bour with six homers and Hechevarria (!) with 29 RBI.
If he's not a great player, then all of us have been misled about the definition of the adjective.

I was thinking earlier than the lefties. After the Marlins got the 2nd guy on, the next 2 hitters were RH and then came the pitchers spot. I didn't know Garcia's pitch count. It just seemed odd that Matheny had clearly decided Garcia was getting the next 3 batters after giving up 2 hits in the 7th.
