6/28 GC

Tsunamy vs. Hammel

Pirates have already lost. Without looking it up, I think a win would put them ahead of the Pirates by nine games, and ahead of the Cubs by 12.5 games.

Weather delay. Thank goodness. We get to hear more tales of the whimsical 1993 Phillies.

Rec.

Speaking of awful announcing, Bob Costas is going to apologize to Pedro Strop, but I'm curious when Harold Reynolds and Tom Verducci plan on apologizing to the Cardinals for stating multiple times during the 2014 NLDS that the Cardinals were stealing signs.

Oh good, we're going to shoot the entire game from behind home plate.

Wow. I didn't hear any of that, but I pretty much tuned out the announcers for most of the night. Did they accuse runners of giving pitches and locations from second base, or is it something more nefarious like the '51 Giants putting a guy with a pair of binoculars in the stands in centerfield?

Supposedly a tornado moving into the St. Louis County area and headed toward Busch Stadium. We just moved to our basement.

Well, this was during the actual Game 1 of the LDS when Carpenter was battling Kershaw. Verducci said Ned Colletti told him the Cardinals will steal your lunch money and your signs. He said the Cardinals are notorious throughout the league for stealing signs. Reynolds kept saying the Cardinals were able to hit .330 with RISP in 2013 because of their sign stealing and probably said five or six times during that inning that it was obvious the Cardinals were stealing signs.

I only mention this because I was reminded of that fiasco when reading an excerpt from a new book that's supposed to come out this week about the 2013-2014 Dodgers.

We're getting pelted with hail. It's supposedly south of our house which means the stadium might be right in the path.

Re: 6/28 GC

Hail starting to hit in south city now. There's a massive blob of red heading for B3.

Again, it's one thing to decipher signals from the catcher or signs from a base coach and use them to your advantage. If the Dodgers are too stupid to change their signals or alter their signs, then they deserve to get them swiped, to a degree.
When I played in an amateur league in Boston many years ago, we used to play a team from a Spanish-speaking neighborhood, and all their signs were verbal. What they didn't know was we had a guy on our team whose parents were Cuban, so he was bilingual. Every time they tried to steal or hit-and-run, we pitched out. Every time they tried to bunt, we were on top of their hitter. And they never figured out why. They just stopped running and bunting.
My American Legion coach never changed signs, ever. His rationale was that if we executed, it didn't matter if the other team knew what we were doing.

All good here. The worst of it passed a couple miles south of us.

Re: 6/28 GC

Tornados didn't materialize. It was one of those meteorologist things where the conditions were right to create rotating winds.

There was hail in spots, and I heard some areas got 2 inches of rain in less than an hour. There are also areas without power.

It's hard to put into words how much I hate Carpenter trying to steal third there.

Pretty much. Max Scherzer could tell the hitters beforehand what's coming and he'd still wipe them out.

The Cardinals roll their eyes at the sign stealing stuff. I'm sure it will come up again if the Cardinals play the Dodgers because Don Mattingly is a crybaby. As it was explained last October, pitchers know pitchers. It's more likely that the Cardinals have a smart group of pitchers, coaching staff and Molina, who all can pick up on tendencies. Obviously this doesn't always work, but the Cardinals' means of beating Kershaw the last two seasons are much less nefarious than Verducci and Reynolds would like to think.

Did you guys get some sort of signal from the Cuban guy about what was coming?

Re: 6/28 GC

"Did you guys get some sort of signal from the Cuban guy about what was coming?"

Yes. He was a pitcher, so when he was on the mound, it was easy. When he was on the bench, the cue was verbal. He'd hear the other team's manager call for a steal and say something like "Hey, Steve," with the name beginning with the letter "S" for steal. For the bunt, it was "Hey, Bob" or "Hey, Bill" and for the hit-and-run the cue was probably Harry or something.
I played with another guy in a summer league who had a knack for stealing signs. He was in the Naval Academy at the time. He probably went on to become a code cracker or whatever they're called in the military. He was brilliant. And he was a good pitcher. He threw sidearm, righthanded, and everything he threw came in like a frisbee. Righties couldn't touch him, but he couldn't get lefties out, though, even as a Div. 1 guy in the Boston Park League.

Re: 6/28 GC

wonder when Madden blows a gasket?  Cub base runners all over SAT first two innings and they got one run?  huh?  Joe who?

Re: 6/28 GC

This Cardinal team. Seems like they're seriously over-acheiving, but I keep expecting them to go back to normal, and they go nuts.

I still am concerned how this carries over into post season when you're dealing with a powerhouse set of starters on the other side, but this team is certainly strong.
