Re: 7/7 Game 2 crap

I don't think I've ever seen the same team mess up a ground ball double play back to the pitcher in both ends of a doubleheader.

Oh fuck.

Angel Hernanez is the plate umpire, so I'm guessing the other three of them have seen some pretty bizarre shit.
The game is still tied if Siegrist doesn't throw an easy double play ball into centerfield, though.

Re: 7/7 Game 2 crap

Did Motte just yell at the Cardinals' dugout? Seriously? You started the day in third place, and you ended it in third place. And if you pitched better last year, you'd still be in that dugout.

I was about to ask how they could do worse with anybody else at 1B.

As frustrating as it is watching him wave at pitches six inches off the outside corner, he was signed to get about 10 at bats every week, not 20-25. What the Cardinals are asking of him is beyond what he's able to provide at this point.

If this last week isnt proof that something needs done to provide offense idk what is.  The bad thing is idk if a first baseman will be enougn.  Of the guys being through around, they are improvements but not game changers.

Why wasnt it reviewable?  Because it was a judgement call of if the ball went over first base bag fair?  I had a get together for the game last night and couldnt hear the telecast.  The only explination I was able to give was the question I asked.  Im pretty sure fair and foul is a reviewable call.

If thats the case the ball still has to put itself in fair ground before first base.  It did not.  It bounces foulmoff the bat...then foul up the line between home and first and then foul in the outfield.  How could the bounce between home and first be fair?  Was it an oblong ball?  I dont think it is going to go foul.....then curve fair and then back foul again.  Just bullshit.

I was switching channels, so I don't know if they ever explained why, but McLaughlin and McCarver were very definitive that it wasn't reviewable. I suppose the reason you suggested is as plausible as any other.

And I appreciate what Artie is saying about Siegrist making the throw, but Siegrist isn't even in the game if the umps get that call correct.

Re: 7/7 Game 2 crap

Siegrist should have just thrown to the bag.  It is the fielders job to be there.  He screwed up when he tried to change the direction of the throw mid throw.

Kasper was sure it wasn't reviewable, but in a "the Cardinals can't challenge .. ha  ha" way.
There are some aspects of the fair/foul rules that are inconsistent. The plate umpire supposedly has the call until the ball reaches the bag, which doesn't make sense because the plate umpire is 90 feet away and the base ump is about 10. And if it's the plate umpire's call, why is the base ump signaling fair or foul? And why isn't it reviewable? Isn't the point of instant replay to make sure the call is correct?
Lastly, I'd like to know what Maness said to get him tossed, and tossed so quickly. He doesn't have a reputation as a hot head. I'm not even sure he's been thrown out of a game before.

Re: 7/7 Game 2 crap

From goolds artical ". Baseball’s replay rules clearly state that the only fair/foul calls that can be reviewed are those that happen beyond the position of the infield umpires. "

Im not a reply fan.  I just as soon it go away but if it is going to be used it shouldnt be assed up.  This is assed up.

True. They made the same mistake in the first game of the doubleheader. Why is it so hard for a pitcher to throw the ball 60 feet in the opposite direction? Is it like some kind of hemispherical thing that makes the toilets in South American swirl counter-clockwise when they're flushed?

Re: 7/7 Game 2 crap

Matheny should have told the press that the fans at Wrigley intimidate the umpires into making calls that favor the Cubs.

Re: 7/7 Game 2 crap

I agree with this

"This would be solved if there was an official at every ballpark whose job it was to review all the plays, even the easy ones that take two seconds to confirm they are correct. If there’s an issue, there’s no delay waiting for the manager to make a call because the official is already looking at the play, already in the process of making the call. It would eliminate the delay."
