I think it's safe to bring someone else in to protect the precious commodity that is Tony Cruz.

Do the Pirates have a pool the Cardinals can pee in?

There's a river that's probably already got some sewage in it.

Re: 9/30 Game 2 crap

BTW, I'm sure tonight will have little bearing on the playoff roster, but I think we confirmed TK's point about Lyons making it over Choate.

Re: 9/30 Game 2 crap

Lyons was lights out . Not overpowering, mixed it up , threw strikes , kept them off balance . Rembrandt like....

And Heyward? What can you say ?

If you're Mo, you say something like "How's 6 years and $130 million sound, Jason?"

Yeah, it's pretty evident the Cardinals need to keep him. His power numbers may not have been what they were looking for, but he's a guy who can get on base, steal a bag, and his defense is about as good as it gets in the outfield right now. And he managed to stay off the disabled list the entire season. Which, for this team, is an accomplishment.

It's too bad Lyons doesn't have a start or two left in the regular season, because a couple more like that and you'd have to think about putting him in the playoff rotation ahead of Lynn. Especially if the Cardinals play the Pirates. He carved them up like Inigo Montoya dueling the Six-Fingered Man.

Re: 9/30 Game 2 crap

What a great system we have in place where Pittsburgh is likely to run 2-3 games ahead of the Cubs and get gifted a winner-take-all against Jake Arrieta. Nice job, Bud Selig.

Imagine what Heywards year looks like if not for that god awful April.

Can the Cardinals give the season MVP award to the team physician, who probably feels like he's been working 130 hour weeks for the past 7 months?

I gotta ask though, with soooo many injuries... What kind of trash is holding down Single A? I might have a shot at a roster!

Not to mention that two of the three teams with the best records in the sport, at least as of right now, will have been eliminated from the post-season by the end of the divisional round.
I'm not sure what else you do other than move the Pirates to the gawd-awful NL East and put the Braves in the Central.
But I still like the playoff setup. The wild card teams have to burn their best pitchers, which gives an advantage to the team that earned the best record.

Re: 9/30 Game 2 crap

My idea is to not reward teams who got a second wild card by letting them gain entry into the postseason tournament. Would it suck for the Cubs that they win at most 97 games and still get shut out? Sure, but them's the breaks. This wild card game is a contrivance manufactured by a commissioner who should've retired after negotiating a painless CBA in 2002. That could've been Selig's legacy, but he had to screw things up by going along with balanced leagues and second wild cards, not to mention his clumsy handling of the steroid issue.

Re: 9/30 Game 2 crap

Describing Selig's involvment in the steroid issue as "clumsy" is being kind.
I think we're going to have to agree to disagree about the second wild card. Look at 2005. The Cardinals finished 11 games ahead of the Astros. What did they get for an advantage? One extra game at home in a 7-game series, which they ended up not playing anyway because the Astros won in six.
If the Astros have to play the play-in game, they burn their ace and maybe use up some of their key bullpen guys. Maybe the LDS against Atlanta turns out differently and the entire post-season takes a different tack.
The only ways to get rid of the wild card is either revert to two divisions, or the pre-1969 model with no divisions. There's no way that's going to happen. Not with all the money involved.

Re: 9/30 Game 2 crap

Today was a good day.  Got to love seeing a clinch.   Good job to lyons on stepping up and to the offense for not double sucking.  Hopefully waino can get some more work in and get his stuff in line and MM can get everyone healthy yet unrusty for the first round.  The good news is cole and arrieta will face eachother and neither will be able for game one of nlds.  Im a pirate fan untill then tho.  Cubs scare me.
