Cards only down about 400 innings from the 2015 staff. Good move to not even feign interest in Lackey.

Jeff Samardzija....reported price tag 5 years 18-20million
Im undecided. On one hand it seems wrong to pay him the same as wainwright but this market is crazy. If lackey got 16 million a year for 2 years the cardinals might be better off paying samardzija a few million more for 5 years. If this market keeps increasing like this the last 3 years will seem pretty reasonable.
Im sort of suprised that the down year in 2015 isnt effecting his market. A return to the nl central might be what he needs and if any team is known for reviving pitchers it is the cardinals.

I think we're starting to see a little panic set in, now that some of the FA pitchers are coming off the board. I'm surprised Greinke is still out there. But then again, Greinke is a weird guy, so he may be asking for some kind of contract rider like the team that signs him has to build him a swimming pool and fill it with chocolate ice cream.

Greinke to Arizona.

See, he likes pools ...

I'm not sure their in it to sign him. I think they're in it to drive up the price.

Yeah, maybe we've only seen Soler at his best, but he looks like a legit RF to me. I guess you could play Heyward in CF, but it would seem to be kind of a waste to throw a whole bunch of money at a guy and then not have him play his primary position.

Well thats the rumor and I havent heard them rumored to resign dexter flowers. Im not sure who the cubs have in mind at cf if not heyward. I thought it interesting reading the articles stating that lackey isnt the type of pitcher most teams would give a draft pick up for so early unless the cubs plan on signing someone else that would have cost them a pick anyway.

Jeff Samardzija to giants 5y/90m

Cards should be panicing. Wainwright, martinez, wacha, cooney, Gonzalez isnt very intimidating.

Hmm...Samardzija at $18MM gets HALF of Greinke's AAV. This market is wild.

You forgot to include Garcia. Unless you're assuming he'll be injured.
I'll throw out a name I wouldn't mind seeing the Cards go after--Wei Yin Chen. He's posted pretty good numbers in a hitter's park in the AL East. Figure a move from the AL to the NL probably drops his ERA about .30 and increases his strikeouts by 25. I suspect you could get him in the $12-15M range.

No I didnt count him as injuried. Just my mental retardness shining through. In all seriousness, there is alot of injury risk in all four of the starters. Wainwright is coming off a lost season. Garcia is as brittle as a 90 year old man. Martinez ended his season on the dl and has the sort of injury that rest and rehab is prescribed. Then suddenly he is under the knife. Finally, the cardinals were never real optimistic when wacha went out with an injury 2 years ago. The feeling I got was that it was going so show up again at some point.
VEB mentioned cliff lee. There is alot of negative sides of that. Health being the major one. If he is healthy and can put one more year together he woukd be huge and inexpensive. However going with burhle might be the safest, most cost effective solution.

I'm worried about Tsunamy, too. Anytime you're talking about a shoulder injury, there's cause for deep concern. I'm not worried about Wainwright, though. Age might start to be a factor, but his "sore ankle" will be fine.

His delivery looks like it puts stress on, well, everything.

And I agree with you on wainwright. To be honest, now that it is behind us, a lost year for a non arm/shoulder only increases the likelyhood of wainwrights health. I am however consistently pessimistic.

I found this comforting
"The Cardinals, Heyman reports, haven’t checked in on Cueto, as the righty “had a rough relationship with Cardinal Nation while starring in Cincinnati.”

Kind of like saying Chuck Finley and Tawny Kitaen had a tempestuous marriage.
