So the Pirates made their 2016 salary offer to Gerrit Cole, who is far in away their best pitcher, and presumably someone they'd like to keep past their initial 6 years of control. The offer was for $538,000. Cole declined the offer because, while his base salary last season was $531,000, he earned a $10,000 bonus for making the All-Star team. Cole argued that he shouldn't receive a pay cut.
The Pirates reconsidered and relented, making a new offer of... $541,000. Cole asked that the team consider increasing it so he made more than in 2015 and the Pirates refused, threatening to reduce the offer to the league minimum if he refused to sign.
I understand that during the first 3 years players have no leverage, but given the amount of money teams piss away on players with no-talent, wouldn't it have made some sense to maybe offer Cole $550,000, just as a sign of appreciation for a guy who was in the Cy Young discussion last season? Seems penny wise and pound foolish to me.

When I read this, my first thought was "He'll hold this against the Pirates when he's eligible for free agency." Then I found out his agent is Boras, and my thought changed to "He'll sign with the Pirates right after Roberto Clemente swims ashore."

Its crazy to see a team haggle of 10,000 when others are haggling over 10,000,000.
