I know I'm a little early, but thought we could put down the hot stove and gear up for reports from Jupiter. It seems like most of the players are already there.
Article in today's P-D about Molina had a line that caught my eye.
" Yadier Molina, who has been with only one big-league team for longer than anybody in the National League, said he wanted to finish his career, entering its 13th season, with the Cardinals."
I don't think I could have guessed that Yadi had that distinction. It's too bad Max isn't here to tell us how the DeWitt organization doesn't respect its iconic players.

Looks like Kolten will be around for a 'wong' time ...

A Wong extension ?

I'm really disappointed I didn't find a new thread with the title
"Cards extend their Wong"

This version says he has the potential to be a "5-tool player."

I always thought wong came up alittle short but this might not be a bad deal. Hard to say what he would have made in his arbitration years because it is hard to say what his production will be. 12 million sounds to be an option so I assume that makes this a 4 year 13 million dollar guaranteed value? Not sure. Also not sure how this helps wong put down root in stl. He can still be just as easily traded.

So the spring training competitions are limited
Grichuk vs pham......clearly grichuk would have to fall flat
Moss vs adams....sort of a toss up here
Piscotty vs moss vs pham.....piscotty would have to fail and the other hit extra well
Wong vs gyro ( or whatev)....I could see this being close and one reason im curious about the wong extension

Wong's deal is 5/$25M with a $12M option. The $25M is guaranteed. The option would be a 6th year.
I doubt Wong is competing for his job. He and Gyorko will probably platoon. Gyorko is decent against LHP.
I think the only real competition is 1st base. Pham is a 4th OF, not a starter. Unless someone gets hurt.

Likely....my only point is with this offense, if piscotty or grichuk fail to hit matheny csnt afford to plug them in everyday if pham or moss are in a hot streak. Long term, i agree pham isnt an everydayer. Moss might be.

If I'm Jerko and I find out about Wong's new contract, I'm saying to myself, "Why the heck did they trade for me?"

By the time 2016 ends, Brendan Moss will have more at-bats than Matt Holliday. Matt Adams might as well.

A back injury is not a good omen.

It's disappointing. I believe Holliday came in pretty determined to make up for last season, but once again, he likely overdid himself on the weightlifting. That's the only explanation I can think of for why he has another pulled muscle in March.

I hope not. I missed the first 3 innings. Idk if he fielded many plays or not. I like the looks of him standing there. I also think it increases his likelihood of staying healthy. Imo moss in left and holiday playing adequate first is a better defense alignment.

Not good news on peralta. Hopefully jerko and diaz can over achieve. Diaz probably isnt ready but he is the closest thing the cardinals have to a shortstop of the future.

If you believe Lance Berkman, he claimed playing first base was harder on his body than playing the outfield. You're always bent over and things happen a lot faster. I'm not very optimistic about the Holliday at first experiment.

I can see berkmans point and I remember him saying that. However, I dont know to many first basemen that blow out a quad chasing a flyball.

True, but Holliday got hit in the nuts by a ball that travelled about 200 feet with diminishing speed. What's he going to do with a line drive that goes 90 feet and leaves the bat at 100 mph?

I can picture him playing first with catcher's gear on .i don't think the commissioner of baseball can see it though.....

Curious about Diaz. Reading a very nice article about him now. Since the club put him on waivers last year, he's been insane..... And he plays Shortstop.
With Peralta out, the Cardinals might actually make him the starting SS until Johnny comes back, if he has a solid spring.

I certainly am not a professional baseball player and my experience in the game lags but I dont see the argument of the outfield being easier then firstbase being true. Edmonds did color for yesterdays game (I think both guys were doing color actually). Anyway he said firstbase was a day off for your body but not mentally. He stated that at first you have to be in on every play and be ready mentally for alot. For example, cut off throws, backing up other positions ect... he mentioned in the outfield you could shut it off or take a play off and get away with it. At first you Will get caught. I havent looked it up but I do remember Edmonds playing a little first base.
In my experience, which is shallow, id much rather be at first. I can play that position and still walk the next day. A night in the outfield results in a me needing a walker for 3 days. Plus gauging flyballs sucks. Id rather deal with a liner hit at my face at first then a popup in the outfield. Cirs, im sure you would pass at a night of running down flys for a stationary position at first.
I think the cards are giving holliday a serious test drive at first. They now say piscotty isnt going to see time there this spring. It makes sense. Why shift him to first and leave the poor fielding/lack of range holliday in the outfield. Holliday has started the last 2 games at first. Imo, the cards want to platoon holliday at first with adams and moss. And if moss and holliday are going to be in the same lineup they will be placing moss in left field. Thats just my opinion.

TRENDING DOWN
Trevor Rosenthal, RP: Another rough outing left him with ugly statistics after three games: A 9.00 earned-run average and a .385 batting average against in three innings. He has allowed five hits and walked three batters. He also chipped in with a throwing error Wednesday.
Manager Mike Matheny insists he isn't concerned, but it's never too early to send Cardinal Nation into a panic.
