Re: Things that would be cool to see ...

I was thinking it would have been cool to see the NCAA act on the 5 suspensions, and apply them immediately. Terrell Pryor is a piece of fucking trash. He's sold everything that he's earned at OSU, and used his signature on cars and tattoos.

Why in USC dealing with a loss of scholarships and bowl exemptions because long time NFL Pro Reggie Bush caught breaks in 2004? Yet Terrell Pryor can sell the deed to Ohio Stadium, and you won't even take him out of the Sugar Bowl?!?!?

The NCAA is such a bunch of situational profiteering fucking cumwads sometimes it's amazing. If you're going to apply the justice of amateurism enforcement in this fashion, let the little peckerwads make money on their names. This is a joke.

Not defending the NCAA, but if Ohio State gives Terrell Pryor a ring or a pin, why can't he sell it?

Re: Things that would be cool to see ...

Directly there's "no problem" with it. Indirectly however you can't allow it or the following will occur.

"We let the Ohio State players keep their pads, helmet, jersey, and a souvenier game football that the entire team signs after every game, a ring for every win, and a OSU car for every title! These are just momentos! Souvenier cars!"

That sounds like a pretty serious reason to attend Ohio State and is really a blatant booster violation and recruiting no-no. The only reason any of it is allowed is for momento, keepsake stuff. Precisely because allowing it really opens the door for a loophole in your "don't pay the kids" system. If he wants to sell it, he's entitled, but he needs to wait until he's no longer an NCAA athlete, or the entire system is a bullshit farce. Which is actually the truest statement of them all.

The bottom line is the Sugar Bowl was not going to be a competitive game without those 5 clowns, so they decided to implement the punishment on 5 folks who could easily bounce to the NFL Draft. Sure they gave their word, but the man sold his awards and gold pants for beating michigan (supposedly the end-all, be-all of an OSU players hopes and dreams), so how can you trust that shit? Didn't matter, the Sugar Bowl didn't want to watch Arkansas beat the shit out of the "eligible" OSU football team, so they made the exception.

It's not so much that I think Pryor needs to hang for this, although I do think he's a fucking scumbag. I think you need to go apologize to Reggie Bush though. That dude got crucified for shit like this. Pryor has about $20,000 in tattoos on his body, the tattoo parlor has a buttload of autographed OSU shit. Pryor has been pulled over three times, in three different high end loaner cars from the same dealership (his was "having work done" all three times). Where's the fucking difference? You declare a Championship season null and void and pressure the man to return his Heisman and let this guy walk clean? I thought Newton's situation was a farce.... This one has me going ballistic.

Re: Things that would be cool to see ...

Maybe I've missed something, but the story I read said that Pryor was suspended for selling his championship rings, memorabilia and for taking freebies from a tattoo parlor.

Setting aside the issue with the tattoos (I agree, the free tattoo is a major no-no) I think it's pretty stupid that Pryor can't choose to sell property that is his.  If he doesn't want a keepsake from the 2010 Sugar Bowl or a "gold pants" pin from beating Michigan, I personally don't see why that's a violation.  Hell, the Bowl game itself is allowed to give these guys gifts up to $500 in value.  Usually, the players get a t-shirt, a hat, a few other miscellaneous items and then a gift card to make up the difference.  Or I've heard of bowl games giving away X-Box systems.  I'm guessing a few players have sold those "gifts" as well.  Should that be a violation?

Re: Things that would be cool to see ...

Of course it should be a violation. How is Ohio State, NCAA, Big Ten and ESPN getting their cut?

Re: Things that would be cool to see ...

I don't have an issue with the "suspension". I have an issue post-dating it to allow him to play in the Sugar Bowl.

The issue with him selling stuff? Tough to explain, but bear with me. Everything I'm about to say is from the corner that you're working with Amatuer athletes, and they should not be taking gifts, handouts, or making money off their athletics. I personally disagree with this entire philosophy as retarded, because of shit like this, you can't police it. People worth millions of dollars are going to find benefits somewhere, no matter what you do. But this is the philosophy that saves the NCAA billions in taxes, and billions in salaries, and this is the adamant stance they've taken, so what Terrell is doing is a bullshit violation of major implications. (See Reggie Bush)

So with that said, you cannot allow current amateur athlete to be hocking his name, image, or anything he's received as a result of playing football. He's not allowed to buy a buttload of OSU helmets, sign them, and resell them for higher money. Why on earth should he be allowed to sell his Big ten ring, or awards from bowl games? He's been given cars to drive around in on loaner basis, tattoos, and now is making money from the hardware accolades he's been given that's supposed to be in keeping with the spirit of tradition and competition and the little shithead is using it as a bank account.

So if you're using the model that amateurs are not to be compensated for their athletic accomplishments, and then allow them to sell their signatures, jerseys, conference rings, awards, then you are in a sense allowing amateurs to be compensated for their athletic accomplishments. This is the same general concept that had Reggie Bush burned in effigy at USC, cost him his heisman, a national championship, and USC finally banned all reference of the man from the team and school he busted his ass on. I don't like waiving Pryors punishment until after a fucking bowl, considering he has no legal obligation to return and even serve 1 minute of the punishment.

I hope that makes sense.

Re: Things that would be cool to see ...

I don't disagree with you on the suspension.  It should have been effective immediately.  No argument on that.

I just disagree with the issue of the ring and other property.  It's his and if he wants to sell it, I don't have a problem with that.

Look at it a different way.  As a result of playing football, Pryor isn't paying a penny for his education.  I believe that includes books.  Let's assume for a second that he actually goes to class.  Who gets the money when he sells back his text books?  How is that any different?  It's free money earned because of his talents as a football player.

Re: Things that would be cool to see ...

Fors that's why I disagree with not letting these kids make money on their own. From what I understand, they aren't even allowed to take jobs. Everything can lead to impropriety. Add to this that these kids earn the NCAA billions. They don't get a free education, they don't get anything free. They could be making millions a year to play, and instead they are getting about 40,000 a year in "free" education while the schools fleece them.

I don't like not paying these kids, but the rules are there. I don't like crucifying Reggie Bush, but making allowances for Cam Newton's "ignorance" or Terrell "Pawn Daddy" Pryor. The hypocrisy is pretty clear. As long as the punishment doesn't impact the games being played now, then drop the hammer. I just think that's a ridiculous stance to take.

Re: Things that would be cool to see ...

I'm not going to profess to be an expert in NCAA rules, but do the rules prohibit them from selling the rings?  If so, then I think it's a stupid rule, but I have no problem with the NCAA issuing discipline because of it.

Re: Things that would be cool to see ...

"The NCAA ruled Ohio State's Pryor, Dan Herron, Devier Posey, Mike Adams, Solomon Thomas and Jordan Whiting broke NCAA rules for selling awards, gifts and OSU apparel and receiving improper benefits in 2009"

I would venture that it is considered a legitimate rule violation to take momento's and accolades and sell them from the above reading.

Here's a good read.
http://georgia.scout.com/2/1035274.html

There's a small clip from an NCAA rep.

“What would stop a booster from saying, ‘Hey I’ll buy your jersey for 50 grand’?† McGarity asked. “So that’s why I think it’s in place.†

That's a good point, opening the door means it can really be exploited. My main fuss in this is you have 5 draft eligible and in most cases players that will be solid level draft picks, and you postpone the sentence. I don't care about the rules much, but "them's the rules", and you gotta enforce that shit.

I have a very strong and legit problem letting Cam Newton off on "ignorance" when the rule clearly reads that you or anyone asking on behalf of you (and the kid's dad did speak for him, even told him where he was going to go to school) is a violation. I have a legit problem postponing the suspensions of Ohio State stating they hadn't been properly educated on the rules. Why suspend them or make them refund the money then? Cam's ignorance was perfectly okay, he won a heisman and is playing for the BCS title on monday, not a single practice has been missed. You can't crucify Bush and let these other dudes skate. I have a very strong problem with the consistency of the NCAA in regards to their rules. More than the rules themselves, this punishment inconsistency is fucking ridiculous.

Going to the ethical? The kids should earn a wage for the money they bring in. However, this cannot be allowed without rewriting everything in college sports.

Re: Things that would be cool to see ...

I agree that if it's in the rules, it should be enforced.  That quote makes a lot of sense.

I agree with you on the issue of the bowl game and Newton.
