Marino

Bill Simmons has a list of the top 10 quarterback seasons by conventional statistics.

1. 2007 Brady (16 G): 4,806 yards, 50 TDs, 8 INTs, 9.4 YPA, 117.2 rating, 16 wins.
2. 2004 Manning (16 G): 4,557 yards, 49 TDs, 10 INTs, 9.2 YPA, 121.1 rating, 12 wins.
3. 1984 Marino (16 G): 5,084 yards, 48 TDs, 17 INTs, 9.0 YPA, 108.9 rating, 14 wins.
4. 1999 Warner (16 G): 4,830 yards, 41 TDs, 13 INTs, 8.7 YPA, 109.2 rating, 13 wins.
5. 1994 Young (15 G): 3,969 yards, 35 TDs, 10 INTs, 8.6 YPA, 112.8 rating, 13 wins.
6. 2010 Brady (16 G): 3,900 yards, 36 TDs, 4 INTs, 7.9 YPA, 111.0 rating, 14 wins.
7. 1998 Cunningham (14 G): 3,704 yards, 34 TDs, 10 INTs, 106.0 rating, 13 wins.
8. 2009 Brees (15 G): 4,388 yards, 34 TDs, 11 INTs, 8.5 YPA, 109.6 rating, 13 wins.
9. 2009 Favre (16 G): 4,202 yards, 33 TDs, 7 INTs, 7.9 YPA, 107.2 rating, 12 wins.
10. 1989 Montana (13 G): 3,521 yards, 26 TDs, 8 INTs, 9.1 YPA, 112.4 rating, 11 wins.

That Marino line is still outrageous. As BS said "Marino nearly matching the Brady/Manning apexes during an era when defenses could maul receivers and punish quarterbacks with few repercussions"

I didn't give a crap about Marino growing up and I've never watched him play a full game, but I've appreciated him a lot more in recent years.

Re: Marino

He averaged 317.75 yards, 3 touchdowns, and just over 1 INT a game. That's amazing regardless. That he did this in 1984 makes it pretty stunning. Made me a Dolphin fan for life.

Re: Marino

Two Viking years are on there with Cunningham in 1998 (Moss's rockie year) and Farve in 2009.  Funny two QBs with such long careers with other teams wound up having their best years late in their careers with the Vikings.  Warren Moon also had his highest QB rating with the Vikings.  I admitt he is a lesser players but Jeff George had his high QB rating as a Viking as well.  That was all during a period of time when Minn was a great place to be a QB.  If the ball was thrown within 10 yard of Chris Carter it was caught.  Then Moss came along.

It was pretty much Marino, by himself, that put the only stain on the great 1985 season of the Bears.  My recollection was that it was his ability to read defenses almost instantaneously, and thereby neutralize the Bears' blitz and actually use it against them that was the key to the game.

Re: Marino

Things that made that Bears Dolphins game amazing.

The Dolphins scored 38 points. The Bears allowed 39 points from the previous 7 games and 3 points in the previous 3.
Miami scored 31 in the first half.
Marino didn't go off based on his season averages, but he did MUCH better than any other QB that played the Bears that season

14-27 270 yards, 3TD 1INT

It still fucking kills me to talk about 1985. Fucking Patriots...

Re: Marino

No question.  The Patriots can't even win right.  They just screw up everything.
