Well they didnt draft him or trade for him. They got him for free. Thats a pretty small amount of commitment.

I think with a Rule 5 guy there's a strong element of putting one over on the team from which he was taken, like "We made this guy into a player when you guys couldn't figure out what to do with him." That kind of mentality, it seems to me, would appeal to the Cardinals. Maybe less so now that the La Russa/Duncan regime has moved on, but there's still plenty of hubris leftover at 700 Clark St.

It isnt a big deal with me. I just havent seen matheny use relievers for multiple innings much this year. Rosenthal is probably the biggest dead weight right now anyway. If he doesnt start pitching effective i could see the bullpen becoming really handicapped with lack of one inning pitchers. If oh goes down the wheels fall off.
