RIP Cardinals Season

Too old. Too slow. Too many defensive lapses. Too many baserunning lapses. Starting pitching that has gone backwards and calls into question what will actually become of Martinez and Wacha's careers. A manager that seems unable to grasp how to run a bullpen five years into his tenure.

Some years you just have to take your medicine and this is one of those years. The good news is that they have some bright pitching prospects on the horizon and no giant contracts they will have to ride out like they are with Holliday this season.

I agree expect for the illness towards holidays contract.  Overpaying toward the end of contract is something you just have to do to obtain top end free agents.  Holliday hasnt really been thst much of a burden.  He will hit, what, 25hrs this year?

Re: RIP Cardinals Season

Ultimately, the fatal blow will be losing their best player because Andrew Cashner has no idea where the ball is going once it leaves his hand. He may have guaranteed himself a full playoff share from the Marlins, but he didn't have to taunt the Cardinals about it. Ordinarily, I'd hope the Cardinals remember what Cashner has cost them and extract full revenge the first time they see him next year, but the manager is so worried about being a proper disciple of his god that it'll never happen.

Re: RIP Cardinals Season

The Cardinals are 2-5 since Diaz got hurt, counting the game he was hit by Cashner. The two games they've won are against a winless pitcher with an ERA over 7.00 and 1-0 when they managed two hits, one of which was an RBI single by Jaime Garcia.

Re: RIP Cardinals Season

I am Holliday's biggest fan, so that wasn't a shot. It's just one of those things every team eventually counters when they sign premium free agents to long-term contracts. It's just the cost of doing business.

As for Cashner, I'm not typically in favor of retaliation, but I hope he gets drilled next season. Freaking knucklehead.

Shit happens. Pitches get away. Guys get hit. But then the Marlins freaked out when Stanton got plunked in retaliation. I know he got hit in the face last year and all, but it's perfectly fine to drill a guy in the wallet. I acknowledge the one part I've never understood is going after the other team's best hitter in the National League, when you can plunk the pitcher himself.

There's a huge part of me that agrees with you on just tagging the pitcher. However, you're allowing the worst hitter to reach 1st with the best hitters coming up (Unless it's Tony Larussa managing, then you might get the pitcher batting 8th).

Currently you can check a runner back endlessly at a base right? What if you shifted the right fielder in for this and decided to throw over 45 times. Worst case, you miss the runner with all of them, and he's had to hit the deck sliding back in every time. Best case? You nail him in the ribs coming back in. No base penalty either!

(Yes, I know I'm an asshole....)

Re: RIP Cardinals Season

Pretty scathing review of Matheny. It's also tough to argue with any of it.

Re: RIP Cardinals Season

I agree, matheny isnt the right guy for the job.  His team continually underpreform.  He cant manage his players as the artical states.  This team would be better suited with a better baseball man.  Freddie Gonzalez or oquendo would be better options.  I sort of hate seeing oquendo keep getting passed over and i think there are reasons he is not with the team right now.
