Bush league by Zobrist.
I wouldn't expect anything less from a team that employs a guy who should be sitting in a jail cell and a manager who acts indignant when his guys get retaliated against.

Well that was an awful call.

So once again I'm baffled by game management. I understand you manage expecting a 9-inning game and have to improvise a bit in extra innings, but bringing in Duke to pitch the 11th is mystifying. The Cubs had four right-handed hitters and Fowler due up. Was turning Fowler around (to his better side, BTW) that much of a priority? Duke's splits this year favor right-handed matchups, but this year is an outlier. For his career, righties hit him 37 points better than lefties do.
Matheny had four righties available in the bullpen - Maness, Broxton, Reyes and Williams. I understand holding back Williams in case the game goes 18 innings, but if he's not going to use Broxton or Maness in that situation, why are they on the team? And is Reyes so brittle that he can't throw an inning on Tuesday and come back on Thursday?
Ultimately, Duke didn't pitch badly. Contreras' bloop single and especially Soler's swinging bunt were fluky. The walk to Fowler - I guess they must really think he is a threat - was egregious, but he atoned by striking out Bryant. If he gets the call on the 3-1 pitch to Rizzo, then the odds favor him getting out of the inning.
An apropos of none of this, after what happened to Holliday last night, I'm telling the umpires that every pitch for the next three days is going to be at Rizzo's hands, which are in the strike zone when he swings. That leaves two options - they keep drilling Rizzo until a bone breaks or Rizzo backs off the plate.

Here's what will happen:
The Cardinals will plunk Rizzo, preferably with Alex Reyes. At this point, the umpires should warn the benches. Instead, there will be no warnings and Maddon will use the opportunity to hit Carpenter or Piscotty to retaliate against the retaliation. Then he'll preen for the cameras and fake outrage.
If the umpires issue a warning right after the Cardinals hit Rizzo, then we rightfully get a situation where neither pitcher can throw inside without fear of ejection. But since Maddon is a world-class asshole, we're in for a show today or tomorrow.

Fuck our bullpen sucks ass anyway. I say plunk a couple warning or not.
