Another year of college football!

Another year I'm hopeful, but we'll have to see. Tis the season for complete optimism! Can't wait to see how it all falls out!

I'm not nearly drunk enough to have complete optimism regarding Mizzou football.  I'd settle for the players not threatening to boycott over bogus claims of racism and a bowl bid.

Re: Another year of college football!

I won't be surprised if ASU loses to Northern Arizona this weekend.
And I plan to watch Alabama/USC, but I'm hoping both teams lose.

Re: Another year of college football!

Things to learn from week 1.

The SEC hype is ridiculous, aside from Bama.... The entire group was pretty underwhelming.
LSU? Pooped the bed. Auburn? Decent effort against #2, but not enough. Ole Miss? Pooped a serious bed with a 22 point lead. Tennessee? OT for Appalachian State, and you're a top 10???

The USC hype is ridiculous. I didn't expect them to beat Alabama, but they didn't even show up. Get off the top 25 polls please.

The ND hype is ridiculous too. Sorry, but you can't get that far back to Texas, present day unranked Texas no less, not Vince Young Texas.

If you know any Oklahoma fans, put them on suicide watch. Yikes.

What I know about the rankings? Alabama is 1. Clemson is currently 2, but really shouldn't be there. FSU or OSU should be 2/3 in my opinion with Clemson falling to 4. You need more than a 6 point win against unranked Auburn to be considered the second best team in CFB to me. (This won't happen, but it's what SHOULD happen). Michigan did what was expected against Hawaii... 66-3. Can't drop them for this, they climb because LSU and Oklahoma both fell. Rounding out my top 5.

Oregon? Little weak at the start, but they won 53-28, against a really terrible team. Nothing to brag about. I don't see them climbing. Next week is Virginia. It's a better opponent, and hopefully a chance for them to climb a little bit.

Re: Another year of college football!

Overall I thought the weekend was pretty entertaining.

As I think we've discussed before, the SEC hype is largely driven by recruiting rankings.  Since they presumably recruit the best players, their teams are presumably the best.  They aren't head and shoulders better than the other conferences, but it wasn't a disastrous weekend.  Georgia and A & M both beat ranked teams.  I never understood the LSU hype to begin with.  Simple fact is Les Miles has never been able to effectively coach the QB position, and the last I checked that's kind of an important position.  You can't try to win every game 13-7.

As for the top 4, at this point, I'd say you've probably got the right top 4 teams, though Clemson looked surprisingly average against an Auburn team that isn't very good and FSU, as you pointed out, did fall behind by 22, so I'm not really sure how good either of those teams are.  Right now I think it's Alabama, Ohio State and the rest of college football.  Quite honestly, Houston might be the 3rd best team in the country.  If nothing else, I'd love to see them run the table and force their way into the playoff.  The only really test they have remaining is Louisville.

Loved the Notre Dame result (and I hate Texas, so that's saying something).  The Notre Dame grad two offices away has been very quiet today.

Some shocks on the polls... Specifically 10 and 11 being Wisconsin/Texas. They both had good wins, but leap frogging 20 schools each to sit that high seems a little crazy to me.

Seems like an over-reaction to beating two schools that were ranked in the top 10, but shouldn't have been.

Re: Another year of college football!

Stanford jumps to #5 after a 13-point win at home over K State?

Oregon is really not getting the 4-3 defense thing yet. I hope they are not as good as they will get, because we're going to get destroyed by GOOD teams.

Clemson and Georgia deserved what they got. You can't beat scrubs by 2 points or 6 points and expect to be called #2 or #15 in the country.

Yep. Losing Royce Freeman early didn't help, neither did taking 45 penalties for a billion yards. But only on important things, like a PI call in the end zone, or 2, but the big one which would have been a FG, and then there was the unnecessary hold as Prukop was driving for a first down to get inside game tying FG range....

But my point stands, Oregon needs more than they have on defense. They have nothing. Going to be a very long season.

Re: Another year of college football!

Bobby Petrino is a scum bag, but Louisville might be the best team in the country.

Re: Another year of college football!

I can't say for sure, but I think if I showed up to Autzen Stadium this morning, Mark Helfrich still would be jumping up and down on the field, trying to intimidate the officials into calling a penalty on ASU.
