Yeah, it was disappointing to hear that.

VEB had a pretty good read on the subject of depth awhile back. Basicly their take is no matter what the roster construction is matheny will blunder it up.

Jen Langosch said on Bernie's show this morning that the Cardinals can't have so much depth next season because it essentially overwhelms Matheny. It's probably not a good sign that you have to have more lesser players on the roster because the manager doesn't know how to use his talent.
I was depressed anyway, then I read this message and I got pissed.
Yeah, let's water down the roster so the fucking manager doesn't get confused.
WTF.
That's one of the most embarrassing things I've ever read.

Well don't get me wrong. When you have 7 Square Pegs that can all fit into 3 Square Holes.... It is probably tough to juggle them all, keep them sharp, get their reps in on the field and at the plate...
However, I cannot remember the last time a perennial playoff contender had something like that said about it's manager... pretty embarrassing...

This is capping a pretty terrible sporting present for me.
Oregon is completely out of control bad.
Miami hasn't been good in a very long time.
St. Louis failed to make postseason looking slightly above average for the entire season.
The Blues are about to fire up again with a group that has no prayer of being considered better than last season. With a coach who's gone after the season ends.
Anyone know any good cricket or rugby leagues I can follow to cheer on a winner?

At the beginning of the year I think I said this would've been a team best managed by La Russa. The word that keeps getting thrown around is "streamline." The team needs to be "streamlined." While I definitely agree there are a few too many of the same type of players, it's mind-blowing that a manager needs to have players with more defined roles. It's the same thing with the bullpen. And we're heading into Year 6.

Streamlines basicly mean make the bench worst.
Not resign holliday because matheny could never limit is usuage
Dont give matheny an option but to play certain players.
Rather then maked a roster designed around a managers lack of intelligence why not just find a better manager.

Thank goodness they locked him up before someone else swooped in.

After that spectacle Maddon and Francona put on this last week, can you blame them? <Internet sarcasm alert>

The Cardinals have also picked up Jaime Garcia's option.
And I thought yesterday would be the worst day this week.

Please let them have a plan for trading him.

Ugh, it is jsut money tho. Hopefully that is how the club is looking at it. Money spent on a deal able backup plan.

They tried to pass Hazelbaker through waivers and he got claimed by Arizona.
I'm afraid to find out what happens tomorrow. Do they trade Reyes to the Astros for a backup catcher?

Not sure who is all on the 40 man right now but they had to make room. I would assume they fugured they would lose the two players they did. For a team with roster space, im not sure the disadvantage in picking one of these guys up and simply releasing them if need be.
As for garcia, his option had to be picked up prior to the world series ending. With a thin and uncertain pitching market i figure the team is planning against the unknown. This time last year lance lynn was penciled in as a starter. Alot can change between now and the start of the season. I assume that is their thining.

Not to pat myself on the back but cespedes opted out of his contract with the mets. Not only would he had solidified centerfield or leftfield (depending on management preference) but he would have filled the heart of the line up for the cardinals in 2016. The signing of him or price likely pushes the cards into the playoffs. Cespedes would have cost the cards the equivalent to a qualifying offer player.

The Cardinals needed to make room for a handful of young prospects who will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft if they aren't moved to the 40 man roster.

Mo is answering the question of upgrading the team in with two answers, centerfield as the main, left field as an alternative. Hazelbaker wasnt really needed imo. Adding an outfielder pushes grichuk and pham into the 4th outfielder positions.

So the big fret is losing another Perdomo? Please. I know Hazelbaker isn't Willie Mays, but I'd rather have him than Pham.

The Cardinals declined to make a qualifying offer to Moss. I think closing out the season in a 9-for-91 slump may have been a factor.

Brett Cecil, 4 years, $30M?
Is Moz just trolling us at this point?

He is an AL player ao i know little about him. Sounds like a good setup man that they overpaid for.

This was a great signing. Cecil has been one of the best relievers in the AL the last four years. His 2016 doesn't look as great because of a lat injury, but this guy can deal.
