Re: Game three gc/rubber game

I've always wanted to know. Why is it called a "rubber game?"

I figured it is a symbol that the series is 1-1 and the series could go eirher way as far as success depending on who wins.  Still doesnt explain the rubber game i guess.  Do they still call it a rubber game if it is a 2 game series or is the cards would have been up 2-0?  Never paid attention.

After doing some exhaustive research on Google, it appears the term "rubber game" applies to the final game of a series, if the series is tied. There's not a lot of definitive information about the etymology, other than the term apparently dates back to lawn bowling in England in the 16th century.

Re: Game three gc/rubber game

I'm mentally preparing myself for Adams starting in left field today despite Piscotty not being concussed.

Re: Game three gc/rubber game

I'm surprised Carpenter hasn't bitched about not being in the leadoff spot yet.

Re: Game three gc/rubber game

This Adams situation is probably the most frustrating thing Matheny has done since trotting out the corpse of Allen Craig through the summer of 2014. The Cardinals made a mistake not trading Adams during the offseason. They publicly committed to Peralta at third and Carpenter at first. This would obviously cut into Adams' time. But they don't tell him to practice left field because 2017 will be all about fundamentals, speed and defense. Then, in the last half of March, they decide Adams is a serious option to play left field and we can all tell this is going to turn into a timeshare between Grichuk -- the speedier, better defender (Tuesday notwithstanding) with more power and Adams -- who has less power, no speed and no defense.

The interesting thing to see is if Mozeliak has to step in and take Matheny's toy away from him in July.

The Adams fiasco is more on Mozeliak, though. If you know going into ST that you have a player who has no role on the team, why keep him? I find it hard to believe there was no market for Adams in the off-season. He's got enough pop in his bat for someone to take on his $2.5 million salary.

Re: Game three gc/rubber game

Count Molina batting cleanup as a stupid Mike move.

Re: Game three gc/rubber game

I thought the Cardinals took batting practice before the game.

Lackey won't be a pleasant dude to be around.

Re: Game three gc/rubber game

It probably wouldn't go over too well in the Carpenter household, but the best lineup the Cardinals could run out there (at least against RH pitching) might be a lineup with Adams at first and Carpenter at third.  Peralta appears to be toast.  Adams may not be an ideal cleanup hitter, but he's a better option than Peralta (or Molina).

Moving Carpenter to first was more of a front office move than an acquiesce to Carpenter. He wasn't very good over there and moving him across the diamond was the best move for the infield defense. I agree that Peralta is toast, but I think the best lineup is Gyorko at third (better than Carpenter and Peralta at defense; better than Adams and Peralta at hitting). Gyorko must wonder how to earn Matheny Bucks.

How does Lynn look?

Re: Game three gc/rubber game

The Gameday graphic of Rizzo is inaccurate because his hands aren't depicted in the strike zone.

It is sort of amazing that a guy who can play 3 infield positions can't really play one above average.  It is my opinion that he best defensive year snd position was the first year he played second base...13?

Between us, I've always been uncomfortable with the stuffiness of that term. George Will is a journalist. I write for a newspaper.
