Sorry, Dan. Wainwright isn't "struggling." His skills have diminished.

That's unfair, AP. A lot of pitchers have gone from the fifth spot in the rotation in Baltimore to a Cy Young winner in the most hitter-friendly park in the National League.

Ok, got 3 good innings from Wainwright. Now get someone up

What will today's complaint be if the Cubs lose? That the sun was too bright?

Haven't you been listening to Edmonds? Wainwright is back.

I didn't really follow Maddon when he was at TB. Was he always this whiny? I don't like the slide-rule either, but the rule is pretty clear that if you slide past the base it's obstruction. Even Happ admitted he slid past the base. It's like crying that 3 strikes is a strikeout instead of 4.

Not sure about all that, but this is probably Wainwright's best performance this year against a team that frequently beats the crap out of him.
Of course as I type this I'm probably jinxing it.

The Rays and the Red Sox used to go at it pretty good, mostly because Pedro Martinez used to throw at Gerald Williams, but that may have been before Maddon was the manager in Tampa.
The Boston media used to love Maddon, He's obviously a good quote, he's well-read and he'll say anything that pops into his head. Contrast that with most of the Red Sox' managers over the years who are so guarded because anything they say will get parsed ten times over.

I don't know if Wainwright is back, but Rosenthal sure is.

I fully expect Maddon to protest that the standings reflect the Cubs are below .500

Yes, Maddon whined when he was in Tampa. He was constantly butting heads with the Yankees and Red Sox and had a feud with the Tigers at one point. He's as paranoid as La Russa, but he's a good quote and friendly with reporters, so he doesn't get raked over the coals like La Russa. La Russa was just too aloof and intense to pull that off and still be well-liked.

The optimist in me hopes yesterday's outing is a sign of things to home. The pessimist in me, which because I live in New England usually towers over the optimist, thinks he got lucky yesterday.
