Interesting side story.  Who gets to wear #15 during Spring Training?  Jay wore #15 last season.

Artie might think Jay is god but he is no Edmonds.  He will give up his number. 

This move is a nothing move.  I think Edmonds is done but if any team was going to give him a chance I am glad it was the Cardinals.  However if Edmonds does make the team he keeps Jay or Craig off the team.  The number thing might not be an issue.

Edmonds posted better numbers than I realized last season.  .276/.342/.504.  11 HR in 246 ABs.

If he's got something left in the tank, Edmonds could be an excellent defensive replacement for Berkman, as well as insurance in the event Berkman (or even Rasmus) goes down. 

Edmonds isn't an everyday player any more, but if there's one thing TLR is a master at, it's maximizing a player's performance over the course of 250 ABs. 

I'm still in shock that the two believe they can coexist.  It seemed pretty bitter when Edmonds left, especially when he was with the Cubs.

Yeah but wasnt it last year that Edmonds jump up on stage at TLR cat benifit and said he was coming back. 

He has better then I give him credit for.  Still, is it worth using a roster spot on him over Jay or Craig?

I shouldnt have said Edmonds cant play.  I dont know if Edmonds can play to the point that he should replace Jay.  Then again that might not be true either.  I kind of forgot that Edmonds hit 11 HRs last year.  Jay wont hit that in his career.  It will be interesting to see how he looks this spring.

Jay is definitely a better fielder than Edmonds at this point, but given 250-300 plate appearances, I think Edmonds can still bring something to the table.

Or perhaps it is your irrational misreading of what I have written?

Some people expect him to play about like he did last year, or even a bit worse.  Others expect a return to .300/.400/.500.  Fors posted some predicted figures that looked a lot like what Edmonds produced, i.e. about .275/.350./.500.

If it's 500-600 AB, then it makes sense.  Edmonds's s SLG was higher than Berkman's, and yet Berkman's projected HR are twice what Edmonds hit.  So, almost surely we are comparing vastly different ABs.  In any case, Edmonds actual OPS in 2010 was .846 and Berkman's projected OPS for 2011 is .880.  So they are within smelling distance of each other.  And, while I confess I haven;t watched either play the outfield in a long, long while, I wouldn't be surprised if Jimmy Baseball still has the edge on Berkman. 

What we might have is a platoon in RF with Jay as a late inning defensive replacement.  It would be nice to have either Berkman's or Edmonds's bat on the bench.  Too bad a young kid has to sit out while the Geritol crowd gives it one last hurrah.  But at this point, I am in favor of seeing the team invite lots bruised and reduced clearance items to spring training.  To quote gary Kasparov, "sometimes quantity becomes quality".
