I just saw it. Mind-numbing. The first drill pitchers work on in spring training is covering first base on a ground ball to the right side, and Rosenhausen forgot what to do.

All these mistakes that seem to be basic baseball, whos fault is it?

Why is it I keep thinking of some of Rod Steiger's lines in Dr. Zhivago:

"There are two kinds of men and only two. And that young man is one kind. He is high-minded. He is pure. He's the kind of man the world pretends to look up to, and in fact despises. He is the kind of man who breeds unhappiness, . . ."

Re: 7/20 Loss Crap

Ill answer my own question....i think it is coaching.  Maybe the whole staff is responsible.  Maybe it is training priorities or structure.  My opinion leans toward a soft manager that players feel like doesnt have the spine to put them in their place after basic mistakes.  It is good to have your players back but in the clubhouse there has to be one boss that you are a little scared of.  The lack of accountability leads to a lack of focus.  It isnt like i know shit but thats my feeling.

It depends.

Do(did) the same players we see making simple basic mistakes make these same basic mistakes working their way through the system?  If so, then I'd suggest that the blame is organizational.

However, if these player were fundamentally sound upon reaching St. Louis and their fundamentals have lapsed since arriving then the blame lies with the major league staff.

I don't watch any minor league games, so I can't say what happens at the lower levels. But my gut tells me the blame is deeper than just Matheny. These guys make mistakes that should be instinctive by the time they reach the majors. I can't imagine a player who has hit the cutoff man throughout his minor league career suddenly forgets to hit the cutoff man upon reaching the majors.

Re: 7/20 Loss Crap

So then why are the Cardinals promoting thier minor league coaching staff, one by one, to the majors.

Not sure if you are asking this rhetorically or if you're looking for an answer. If the latter, my guess is that Moz is promoting people who will happily take the job and not rock the boat. It's pretty clear Matheny isn't picking his staff. And I can't imagine this shit show is that attractive to anyone from the outside.

Just my opinion, but when Larussa retired Moz wanted a team that was "his."  Larussa correctly got credit for how the team and coaching staff looked from 96-2011. Since then, it's been Moz's call. Problem is Moz isn't as baseball smart as Moz thinks Moz is. That's why Matheny was hired, not an experienced manager like Francona. Matheny doesn't have the coaching stripes to question the GM.

Re: 7/20 Loss Crap

I doubt your far off with your conclusion.  Im not a yes man and it is extremely hard for me to value people that are.  Everyone has a boss and has to fall in line to them but theielr has to be a certain amount of feed back and accountability at the top as well.

To take your opinion further, do you think moz is placing yes men around him to preserve his own job?

To an extent, yes. But I think part of it is ego. I suspect in baseball circles Moz doesn't get much credit for 2011. Both he and Luhnow were big fans of Rasmus. Trading Corey was the key to winning in 2011 and that was more Larussa's call than Moz's. I don't think Moz wants a personality that's bigger than his.

Re: 7/20 Loss Crap

"Matheny is still doing his “servant leader” routine with players who clearly don’t listen, don’t pay  strict attention. They know he’s an easy mark. He’ll always cover their backsides for them.

Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. is 100 percent supportive of his manager — even with his team’s vaunted winning culture at risk.

During this run of awful baseball, John Mozeliak was promoted from GM to president of baseball operations. Michael Girsch was promoted from assistant general manager to GM."

Bernie says it!  I do hate the term servant leadership.  Imo, it leads to pussy leadership.
