The Next Matt

It has seemed to that the Cards in recent years have had players named "Matt" out the rear.  Since I don't follow other teams, I don't know how representative that is.  But I have assumed that it was so not only for baseball but for our society as a whole.  Why I don't know.

Back in the 90's, I recall ESPN reporting a trade between San Diego and the Mets in which 5 of the 6 players involved were name "Kevin."

Recently I noted that the Cards have two lefties named "Austin," - one at Springfield and one at Peoria.  The one at Springfield is 6 inches taller.  In trying to go back to find the shorter guy a few days after I had first noticed him, I did a search at the Milb Web site.  In doing my search I found that the Cards had 2 more in the farm system and that there were more Austin's in the minor leagues than the combined total of Elizabeth Taylor's husbands and gay friends.

Is there some role model out there who has inspired this rash of Austins under the age of 25?  Right now a disproportionate number of them seem to be pitchers.  But I predict it won't be too long before the Cards have at least 2 in their starting line-up.

I'm no expert on pop culture, but I'll try to give an answer. There's a wrestler named Steve Austin who was popular a couple decades ago. But I don't think a WWE figure would spawn a name craze.
Maybe one of the New Kids on the Block was named Austin? I think Fors is a big fan.

Actually, my sister loved the New Kids on the Block, but the only one I could name is Donnie Wahlberg and that's because of his role in the Band of Brothers series on HBO.

Austin Powers maybe?

Which Wallberger brother admitted he used to be a racist? Was that Donny, Marky or Cubby? And is one of them married to that uber-skank Jenny McCarthy, the bubblehead who promulgates the myth that vaccinations cause autism?

I had to look it up because I'm not a Wahlberg afficianado, but apparently Marky was the racist and Donny is married to McCarthy

I once asked Zach's pediatrician if there was any evidence there is a link between vaccinations and autism. His reply was, more or less: "I graduated summa cum laude from Johns Hopkins. I did my residency at Boston Children's Hospital. I've been in private practice for 25 years. Had I known the only requirement to be an expert in pediatric medicine was taking off my clothes for Playboy, I could have saved myself a lot of time and money."
