Next Up?

Mike Mayers has joined the team in anticipation of Wainwright going on the DL

http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/cardinal-beat/mayers-joins-cardinals-as-wainwright-likely-to-go-on-the/article_d0f973d6-fb46-59ab-87c0-397ef211a1cd.html

Mayers has been pitching out of the pen for several weeks now.  Hoping that Leake will go on the 10 day also, who is the next man up?  Without moving someone off the 40 man roster, here's who's available:

1.  John Gant  -- A Right Handed Starter.
2.  Sean Gilmartin -- A lefty on rehab in the Gulf Coast League.  Listing him as available may be an overstatement.  He appeared in a couple of games before being released by New York and went on the DL right after the Cards signed him and has been there for almost all of the season.  He appeared in quite a few games in 2015, a very few in 2016, and has a couple of ML starts to his credit.
3.  Rowan Wick -- A hard throwing, right-handed reliever now pitching in AA, with about 3 years experience as a pitcher (if you count the many days on the DL).  Started out as a left-handed hitting catcher with tremendous power but an inability to make contact as he got above rookie ball.

Of course Siegrist may come off the DL soon but Mo didn't sound last night like it was a sure thing that Siegrist would be joining the Cards.  He said it would then be "a baseball decision," whatever the F that is.

Aside from Gant, the 3 remaining regular starters for Memphis are Flaherty, Pearce, and Hudson.  It would be pushing things to call up any one of the three but they probably will have to.  None of the 3 are currently on the 40.  It's really a damn shame about Poncedeleon.  He probably didn't have the same upside as Flaherty or Hudson but, with the way he was pitching, he would have been a good choice at this time.

Re: Next Up?

Does a player have to pass through waivers to be dropped from the 40-man?

I wrote you a detailed answer saying that the answer is "No" but the more I wrote the less confidence I had in what I thought was the case.

Where is Fors tonight?

Yes, a player has to pass through waivers to come off the 40-man

At hhe time you wrote this, I had come around to the same conclusion just by trying to apply common sense.  But it didn't seem consistent with what I recalled from previous instances of players who were not out of options.  And once again, it appears that Mayers has returned to Memphis without having to put him through waivers.  But it would also make sense that a person who has come off the 40 could be claimed as a Rule 5 guy.

Either way, I think Mayers performance last night guaranteed that he wouldn't be claimed for another team to put on their 25 man roster, whatever it is called.

I wonder if J. Martinez will still be there when the morning comes.

I think you're confusing options and the 40 man roster. Once a player is added to the 40 man, the team gets so many times it can "option" him to the minors. An option is good for the year, so a player can go up and down as many times as necessary in a single season and that's still only 1 option.

Mayers wasn't exposed to the other teams to send him back to Memphis. I think he was first added to the 40 man roster last season. He was optioned out at the beginning of the season when he didn't make the team out of spring training, but that might be his first option.

Apparently the Cardinals had an open spot on the 40-man. It's possible that opening was created when they traded Gonzalez who was on the 40-man for a player who likely still isn't on the 40-man. They didn't have to expose anyone to create a spot of Lucas.

Edit to add--the fact that Mayers was sent down doesn't mean he's removed from the 40-man. He's still on that roster.

Re: Next Up?

Fors,

I think you are mistaken.  All indications are that they had to remove Mayers from the 40 man roster.

http://m.mlb.com/stl/roster/40-man/

I read in a couple of columns, Goolds's I think and the other at the Cards stlcardinals.com site that Mayers had been removed from the 40 man to clear a spot for Lucas.

BTW, we don't seem to be getting this afternoon's game on Comcast.  Good.  I'll get a few things.

Incidentally, in my original post to Arte's question, I wrote that it was important to note that being out of options and being off the 40 man were two different things.  But the more I wrote the more I decided I didn't know what the hell I was taking about and rewrote the whole post.

Your link shows Mayers on the 40 man roster. He's not on the "active roster" meaning he's not on the 25 man major league roster.

Damn, I apparently misread at all three locations.  And you are right about the Gonzales trade.  I thought O'Neil had had to be added to the 40 man but he wasn't.
