XM has a Blues station, but it's not very adventurous. There's a lot of B.B. King, Robert Cray and Buddy Guy. Every once in awhile they'll throw you a bone with something a little more obscure like Roy Buchanan or Hound Dog Taylor, but they pretty much stick to the script. And they move the channel around every couple of years. It used to be Channel 70, and now it's 74. Before that, it was in the 60s, and when I first got the radio I think it was in the 30s.
There's also a station that's called "Outlaw Country" that's has a show in the afternoon with Mojo Nixon, who plays everything from Zappa to Bob Wills, but when Nixon isn't on it's a pretty bland mix of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams Jr.I ment the stl blues

"Part of the problem with moving to MP# is that I have a whole lot of tapes and CD's that I don't want to put in a yard sale."
I have ~1,000 cassettes that are in two boxes somewhere in the attic. When Sheryl and I got married, we lived in a little apartment just outside of Boston. Two years later, we moved to a starter house one town away from where we live now, and after seven years there we moved to our current home. When we moved from the starter house to our current home, I instituted a rule that any item that was still in the same, unopened box from when we moved from our first apartment was not necessary and thus bound for the landfill. Needless to say, this was the source of some marital strife at the time. We've lived in our current home for 15 years, and my two boxes of cassettes still have the packing tape on them from the last move. Which means we have to stay in our current house forever, because I'm never discarding those tapes, even though I'll probably never listen to them again.

AP, how far do you live from St. Louis? I remember Max asking you once if you lived near the Indiana border, but I would think there would be a station that carries the Blues' games. I've heard over and over one of the reasons the Cardinals have always maintained an appeal throughout Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, et al, is because of the availability of the radio signal from St. Louis.

That apparently was once true of KMOX but even as I was growing up in the 50's about 60 miles SW of Little Rock, we only got the games on a Little Rock or Hot Springs station. Occasionally we could pick up a night game on KMOX. But they played a lot more day games in those days.
These days in the right part of town I can often get KMOX in Memphis, especially at night. But most likely with quite a bit of interference.
In September 1968, long before I had much experience with Memphis, my wife and I were driving back to my base in Virginia at night.Actually, I was driving. Even back then, my wife would fall asleep in the car as soon as it got dark, whether she was driving or not. Somewhere just east of Memphis, I picked up the Cardinals versus the Giants in San Francisco. It was in the first inning and I believe it was Jim Ray Hart hit a home run off of Gibson. It was only 1 of a couple of hits that Gibson allowed. But Gaylord Perry pitched a no-hitter. I believe we were actually getting close to Knoxville, which is about 400 miles from Memphis, when the game ended. It is hard to believe today but I was able to keep the car on close to 100 mph on I=40 in those days and we were probably a lot further from Memphis than I recall.
Anyway, the point is that I had to change radio stations a couple of times to keep the game as we were traveling across Tennessee.
Incidentally, I spent the next night near my base on the eastern edge of Virginia and of course could not get a West Coast Cardinals' game. When I got an evening paper, I learned that Ray Washburn had no hit the Giants the night following the Perry game.

Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2006 - Houston is playing extra innings at Pittsburgh. If the Astros win, they move to within a half-game of the Cardinals in the division. I have to go in to the airport to pick up my wife from a business trip. Driving to the Boston airport, even at 10 p.m., is a friggin' nightmare, so I'm on edge anyway. This is before I had a car with satellite radio, so I'm flipping the AM dial, and I somehow end up with the Pirates' broadcast from Pittsburgh. At the time, in order to get from the airport to our house, you had to go through a tunnel under Boston Harbor, and you lost all radio reception. I remember the Pirates had a chance to walk-off the Astros in extra innings and I pulled the car over to the side of the road just at the entrance to the tunnel so I could hear the at bat. My wife, who had been in the air for about eight hours, was none-too-thrilled.

In the internet age, it's easy to forget how long we had to wait for West Coast scores. I remember even in '98, if the Cardinals were in California, I had to wait until the next morning to find out on the radio whether McGwire and/or Sosa had homered. It was almost impossible to follow Arizona State football, because they almost always played on Saturday nights. You had to wait until the Monday morning paper came out.

Here, I’m just gonna go out on a limb and assume you do all the night driving .?

Yep not that long ago at all. I used to go to grandmas and read the box score of the newspaper they got which was a day old. So i was reading about a 2 or 3 day old game.

I agree, but I hardly see how it constitutes going in a new direction.

Not sure if maddux is a stat geek or not. My impression is that he will bring a strong independent presence. He has been around a long time, had success and probably more liekly to take control. Just my thoughts tho.
I think you could say the same about willie and oquendo.

I don't know what kind of instructive presence McGee is going to be. Don't get me wrong, I loved watching him play, but I can't imagine him trying to teach another player to replicate some of the things he did. "Yeah, that pitch that's an inch off the ground and is going to hit your back foot? Go ahead and take a swing ..."

Well idk either. Probably wont know. Not even sure what his title is. What i have read about him and oquendo are similar. Both are no non sense, have high standards for fundamental baseball and believe in holding every player to those standards. If that truely is their reputation then id say the goal of moz has been to sign coaches that can babysit his shitty manager.

According to an article in the PD, Maddux is really big on "analytics," which I think means looking at whole lot of numbers that Bill James says are meaningful.

My guess is that Willie is there because he is such a fan favorite and also because he's so damn positive and unselfish that he's bound to help with morale. All this stuff about helping base stealers has always seemed like a lot of crap to me. Sure, an experienced base stealer can offer some practical tips to guys with speed. But if Lou Brock ;can train base stealing, I don't think it can be taught. And I never saw any evidence that he was able to make base stealers our of guys who were just fast. And I've seen very few speedsters who were as articulate as Brock and very few base stealers who analyzed their craft as he did.

I'd like very much to be able to find out what these guys are really calling up on their lap tops.

Apparently the playoff crap thread has taken a serious detour . Now let us look forward to 2018 with aspirations of filling all the holes enough to get back into the playoffs. Mo ? Mr. Dewitt ? Are you listening ?
The St. Louis Cardinals have no business being the 3rd place team in the central division .

Read on the cardinals offseason expectations it seems the jist is that they needs everything and could do anything.

My take on what the expect from the off-season.
The Cardinals will give lip service to the notion that they were in the running for several big names (Stanton, JD Martinez, etc...) but won't get a big name. They'll come up with something--either a new outfielder or a new corner infielder, but the move will be underwhelming. The regular lineup next season will include Carpenter leading off, Fowler, DeJong, Molina and Wong. Pham, Grichuk, Piscotty and Gyorko will all be in the mix for a potential trade.
They won't re-sign Lynn, and I don't even think they'll make a serious offer. Martinez, Wainwright, Wacha and Weaver will make up 4/5 of the rotation. They'll likely sign a veteran on a short term (1-2 year deal) to allow Reyes to get healthy and Flaherty to develop.
I suspect the bullpen will be the one area where they make a somewhat legitimate effort. They need a closer. They're stuck with Cecil. They seem to like Brebbia and Bowman. Lyons will be a part of the bullpen. That leaves 3 spots to fill.I think they'll get a closer from outside the organization. They may make an effort to re-sign Nicasio, and I could see them going after 1 more pitcher from outside the organization.

I agree with tk, wherever the fuck he is....the bullpen is a crapshoot. If you get a good year from a reliever he is likely to be bad the next. Hopefully that is the case with Cecil.
Im sort of confused about the idea of signing a veteran starter to a two year deal. I could see a one year deal just to bandaid that 5th spot, shuffle the veteran to long relief if the younger guys push their way in or just eat the contract. Still it is a little confusing to me as to why they traded leak if that put them right back in the market for a 4 era/200 inning guy. Idk i suppose they got oniell out of it and even picking up the 17mill on leaks contract they will likely sign the veteran for less the would have been owed to leak. Seems sort of like trading your ford truck for a dodge because the dodge has better tires. Alot of effort for slight gain.

The only reason I think they'll sign someone like that is the make up of the current rotation. I don't think they'll go into the season with a rotation of Wainwright, Wacha, Martinez, Weaver and Flaherty. Reyes shouldn't be ready since full recovery from TJ surgery is 14-16 months. A veteran on a 2 year deal gives them coverage for this year and next year when Wainwright's contract comes off the books.
I'm not saying that's what I necessarily want them to do, I'm saying it's what I expect them to do. I think they need a top-end guy, but I doubt they'll go after one.
