Do the Cardinals have 3 middle of the order outfielders on the team?

Who is the third, or are you failing to exclude Stanton?
I assume it means Yelich and Ozuna will be available at a pretty good price for some team that can afford their salary.

I was speaking of the marlins and Jeters comment that stanton would be the one start on the team. I should have said 2 middle of the order outfield bats (Yelich and Ozuna). Question being is this statement a clue that the marlin plan to sell off their whole outfield?

Yeah thats what i was getting at. If that is the case, i wouldnt be upset if the cards passed on stanton.

Yeah, I misunderstood you. I think the Marlins have suggested that anyone’s available. If they kept Stanton, then i think they’d trade the other two.

An article i read the other day stated the Marlins expect the buyer of stanton to take his full price tag and take dee gordans contract. Idk if thats true. Seems more likely they would attach him to one of the others. Never the less i wouldnt be disappointed to land one of the others for the right price....not as high as stanton of course.

Sounds like the giants people are meeting with stantons people

Diaz to blue jays for minor leaguer

Another report out stating stanton will not waive no trade clause for cardinals.

If giving up prospects/players - specifically Reyes - is the primary issue, then I'm willing to cut the Cardinals some slack here. If he stays healthy, Reyes is going to be a star for a long time.
If their primary issue is money, I'm not going to be forgiving at all.

From all accounts I've read, it's sounds like the Marlins are focused on Alcantara. I haven't seen any other names, though I'm sure there are at least 2-3 others (or more) being thrown around.
I wish I shared the same optimism about Reyes as you do. Until he stops walking a batter every other inning, I'm just not that convinced. Feels a little like Rich Harden--great stuff, but rarely pitched more than 5 innings because he was already over 100 pitches by that time.

I'll grant you control is an issue, but he's still only 23 and has pitched less than 500 innings as a professional. Anytime a young pitcher with prodigious talent has control problems, there's an inevitable and unfair comparison to Koufax. But I think if this kid puts it all together like Koufax did, he could be that good. This isn't Jonathan Papelbon humping up to throw a couple 100 mph fastballs over the course of an inning. Reyes hits 100 and looks like he's barely breaking a sweat.

There was a rumor circulating on talk show radio that the Cardinals offer was Wacha, Alcantara and Jose Martinez
No idea if it’s true, but that sort of package wouldn’t trouble me much.

Or at all. Id assume with the suprising lack of prospect power in 2 out of 3 of the names that the cards would take the full contract.

I cant believe the cards have the best deal with these 3 players. One is a top prospect, no debate. Martinez doesnt help the marlins rebuild at all. Not even a long shot chance. He is a right now, next 2 years impact as a marginal player. Wachas time in the league is peaking or has peaked. Idk, i assume the Marlins would flip them but id still have picked other opinions.

Reportedly the Giants have offered Joe Panik and two prospects, neither of whom are in Baseball America's top 100 prospects. One is a 1B/OF who is already 24, has marginal power (24 HR last season) but also struck out more than once every four at bats while playing at AA and AAA and supposedly can't play defense adequately anywhere. The other is a 24 year old pitcher who posted an ERA of 5 at AAA last year.
If rumors about the 2 trade packages are correct, the Cardinals offer is much better.

The thing to keep in mind in evaluating potential trades with the Marlins is that they want to dump salary. Stanton isn't going to command much if a team is willing to take on most/all of his salary.
I know people have suggested the Cardinals should switch direction and go after either Ozuna or Yelich. Those guys would cost a lot more than Stanton--in terms of prospects needed to complete the trade--because those guys don't cost anything in actual dollars. Ozuna made $3.5M last year and has 2 years of arbitration left. Yelich is signed through 2021, with an option for 2022, to a contract that pays him an average of about $11-12M/year. You want either of those guys, you're going to have to unload some prospects. Plus you'll have a lot more teams in competition for a trade because these guys are a lot more affordable.

I know nothing about Alcantara, except what I've read. I like Martinez. He really seems to enjoy playing in the major leagues. I suppose being in the minors for almost a decade will do that to you. And he can carry you offensively for the week he's hot. But he's nearly 30, isn't consistent, and is one of the worst defensive players I've ever seen. I'd have the most difficulty trading Wacha. I know he's been a back/middle of the rotation guy for the past three years, but I still have visions of him reverting to 2013.
