I question the time of dismissal of adams and grichuk but your examples are valid. Even at adams and grichuks peak value it probably wasnt much more then what they got.

The thing I look at with Leone is his age. He just turned 26. Hopefully, he’s headed into his peak performance years, and he’s under control for 4 more seasons.
Gregerson is the opposite. He’s in his early 30’s. He scares the crap out of me because players don’t tend to trend up after a certain point. Plus, closers who pitch to contact generally aren’t that successful.

Im un denial that the plan is for gregerson to be the 2018 closer. Refusing to believe it

I agree with everything Fors wrote about Gregerson and Leone.
From day 1 of his signing, I was surprised that they were treating Gregerson as such a key piece of the bullpen. I have to believe all this talk about his being the closer is some sort of misdirection, either because they have another trade in the works or because they don't want to admit that they are looking to an inexperienced pitcher to take over the job. Possibly Tuivailala or Reyes. They would catch a lot of shit if they admit that they are counting on one of those guys, or both, and it doesn't work out.
There are problems with that theory but it's the only thing I can come up with (besides a trade).

Reyes makes more sense, at least to me. Young guy coming off surgery who throws hard enough to get you strikeouts in the ninth inning. But I'm pretty much done trying to figure out how Matheny handles a bullpen. I think he spins a roulette wheel.

If Matheny gets to use Reyes out of the pen I hope that TJ surgery comes with a warranty.

I hope the addition on maddux helps with mathenys decision making.

I assume the strategy would be to hold Reyes back until sometime around June and try to cover the closer spot with a combination starting with Gregerson and an effort to groom Tui for the spot if his control improves.

The P-D site itself is one of the most annoying websites I've ever surfed. There's a ton of crap that has to download before you can even get to the story, and once you get there you have to answer their survey questions before you can read the article. I try to pick the answer that is going to get me to the story the quickest, but sometimes I choose the wrong response and end up having to answer about a half-dozen of their silly survey questions. By that time, I'm more likely to just click out of the website.
No one knows more than I how tough it is to make a buck in the newspaper business, but geez.

Grichuk's a little salty.
“There were a lot of times when me and fellow outfielders kind of felt that if we were in the lineup, you’ve got to get two hits — or one hit and a walk — to be in there the next day," Grichuk told Sportsnet. "And that wasn’t good for anybody’s confidence or anybody’s state of mind stepping in the box. It’s a tough game to play. And it’s even tougher when you’re looking over your shoulder. Or questioning what’s going on or why it’s going on."
And here's Grichuk on why he expects his speed and base-stealing skills to be on better display in Toronto.“I don’t know if the Cardinals weren’t big into stealing bases or taking that chance was not the best percentage they liked,” Grichuk told Sportsnet. “But we never really got the green light or the steal (sign) that often. I would like to steal more."

Well, it's kind of hard to steal a base while you're sitting in the dugout after striking out for the umpteenth time because you're no better at recognizing a slider in the dirt after four years in the majors.

I find it hard to resist going to the PD during the regular season. But I try not to give them any hits if I can make myself resist. I really can't stomach the two Bens. They are as petty as Bernie was and are less knowledgeable.

Unless it’s really bad and gets past the catcher.

They apparently intend to give him that many plate appearances. I don't really follow the Blue Jays that closely, but I think if I did I'd probably be pissed they intend to start an outfield of Curtis Granderson, Kevin Pillar and Randal Grichuk.

I miss Joe Strauss. He got a lot of good information and he didn't drink the Cardinal Kool-Aid, though his propensity for reminding you of the latter was more than a little overdone. The Bens don't strike me as being especially insightful or clever, but I probably haven't read enough of them to form a concrete opinion. This is stating the obvious, but one of the problems with newspapers and media in general these days is they've gone from disseminating information to rendering opinion because they know they have an audience that wants its own biases fortified. They're missing the other portion of their audience that wants to be presented with facts because it is capable of making up its own mind. The Boston Globe has become un-readable. Every other article is opinion.

I assume the heart of the order is going to be donaldson and tulo. Probably planning on a resurgence on the later. Then surround those guys with granderson and grichuk. Its pretend competing. Donaldson will be available at the deadline.

Hummel gives a pretty bare bones, mostly facts account.
I have always liked bernie in a love hate way. He is a blowhard but i do enjoy the his writing with 101. It isnt white washed like it was at the pd. To many numbers but i glance over that.

If they're relying on Tulo, they're crazy. He's hurt more than he's healthy these days, and his average with Toronto is 50 points less than it was with Colorado.
I like Kevin Pillar, but mostly because of his defense and intensity. He'd be a seventh place hitter on a good National League team and an eighth place hitter on a good AL team.

Hummel has the vocabulary of an eighth grader, has trouble crafting a cogent sentence and doesn't break any news. I stopped reading his tripe a long time ago. I'm almost certain the "Commissioner" label his colleagues have bestowed on him is sarcastic. He's a fossil; a throwback to the days when sports writers drank with the team, smoked cigars in the press box and looked the other way whenever anything controversial happened. If the P-D had any serious print competition in St. Louis, he would have been gone a long time ago.
I haven't read much of Bernie's stuff since he left the P-D. I thought from a technical standpoint when he was there he was a mediocre writer, and I can't fathom why any journalist would close a column with "Thanks for reading" and expect to be taken seriously.

I think they are just playing the game...and im not talking about baseball. Gain enough interest to sell first half tickets. When shit goes south they can say they tried and firesale, shed payroll and gain prospects.
