5/6 Roster moves.

I need to get out to Autozone by 11 to see he Redbirds game.  It should be an excellent opportunity to see several of their AA prospects.

Re: 5/6 Roster moves.

I didnt follow the game yesterday except by boxscore and a little radio.  That was a hell of a nut shot.

It was right between the one and the two. Mrs. Molina is going to have to do without for awhile, I suspect.
Did they call up Kelly yet?

Apparently they were both still attached when he left the field.  But I'm not for sure.

If I were a catcher, it would probably take me a month or two to get up the courage to call for another sinker after witnessing that..

Re: 5/6 Roster moves.

Well, it looks like Pham is going to have them playing short-handed.  The Redbirds game is in progress and doesn't appear that they are missing any position player besides Kelly.

Incidentally, O'Neill has a couple of homeruns since being sent out.

The P-D referred to Molina's injury as a "traumatic hematoma."
No term for what the guys who watched it experienced.

Re: 5/6 Roster moves.

I have to assume he wasn’t wearing a cup. I suppose it’s possible that it simple broke the cup, but I know a lot of players elect not to wear one.

Any catcher who chooses to not wear a cup is an idiot.

Re: 5/6 Roster moves.

I figured every catcher wore one.

I can say with relative certainty he was wearing a cup, and the foul tip broke or maybe even shattered the cup. Pitchers, catchers an any infielder with a brain wear cups. Outfielders generally don't.

Re: 5/6 Roster moves.

I'm in the camp that thinks that he probably wasn't wearing one.  Even though it sometimes appears otherwise, it's basic physics that when the ball and the bat connect the bat is going to slow the ball down some.  I've never worn a cup nor even had the opportunity to do so.  The quality of my teenage baseball was such that we only had a couple of bats and normally played with only one ball for an entire game even though the outfield was almost entirely slate.

But I have the impression that the cups provide a serious defense.  The first time I ever knew that there was such a thing as a cup was around 1957 or 58.  The Cardinals acquired a pitcher from the Cubs named Jim Brosnan, who was very much an intellectual by reputation and appearance.  He kept a diary during his first season with the Cards that was eventually published as a book entitled, "The Long Season."  It broke ground for "Ball Four," and, though not as specific, was probably much better written.  One magazines I read at the time (I believe it was "Sport") published several pages of the diary.  Their were two parts that I still remember well.  One of them was how he spent many hours discussing religion with his roommate, Lindy McDaniel, who I believe was an ordained Baptist minister.  Apparently they had many differences.

The other part I recall was Brosnan taking a line-drive in the nuts that broke his cup and telling about being sore the next day and getting kidded a lot by his teammates.  After that I heard more about players take a shot that broke their cup.

Re: 5/6 Roster moves.

I've been able to confirm that Molina was, in fact, wearing his cup.  The impact ruptured some sort of protective sheath that surrounds the testicles.  He did not rupture the testicle itself.  The surgery was to repair the inner structure of the scrotum.

Read that paragraph without cringing.
