I’m not one to blame coaches, but is there any doubt that anyone other than John Mabry would have been fired long ago?

The Cardinals are 29th in team batting average. The guillotine is going to fall on Mabry soon. Followed by a story in the P-D two days later citing anonymous sources who claim Mabry became a deleterious influence in the clubhouse because spent too much time reading Nicholas Sparks novels instead of going over video with the hitters.

The situation with the hitting coach is particularly baffling because, by all accounts, the guy at Memphis is viewed very highly by the players.  In fact, there have been stories written in the past about younger players going to the guy in Memphis rather than Mabry because he knew better how to help.

It's pretty obvious that Mabry is only on the team because he reads bible verses with Matheny.  Again, I've never been one to think that the coaches mean that much to the overall success of the team, so it really doesn't bother me, but in this case, I think they could actually upgrade.

Ive never been in a major league clubhouse but i would think coaches would have more influance then you give them credit for.  Oquendo has seem to transform this team over night.

My guess is a coach doesnt have much to do when things are rolling.  When the whole infield is fielding like clones of Omar vazquel there isnt a lot of instruction needed.  Same with hitters if id assume.  When guys are raking you just sit back in your rocking chair and draw a pay check.  However when 2 starters are hitting .150 im sure they are searching.  If the hitting coach cant help them im sure that doesnt help much at all.  Or even worst, if the hitting coach is giving the wrong advice it is going to prolong the slump.  Even bad asvice, that you know is bad advice gets in your head when things are going bad.

There are guys who see things that others may not. Duncan was one. Edmonds was in the booth in Pittsburgh one night earlier this month and was able to correctly predict every pitch the pitcher threw, just by watching how the pitcher took the sign and how he reacted. He was talking about when to rule out certain types of pitches depending on situations. It's like how a professional poker player can pick up tells. Part of that has to be learned, but there's a part of it that also has to be innate.
