Re: 7/31 GC

I'd like to know if anyone in the history of baseball had had 26 home runs and fewer than 60 RBI.

Re: 7/31 GC

Carpenter passes Brock for most leadoff HR as a Cardinal.

He’s only 923 SB behind Brock

Blackmon has 20 HR and 47 RBI

In the recent past, I would have argued Blackmon also steals bases and gives you half-decent defense, but he's not done much of either this season.

Make that 21 and 49

At least the problems with the bullpen have been fixed.

Re: 7/31 GC

For some reason, I’m no longer able to post on the topic of trade deadline.

Fors is definitely right about the lack of lefty bats.  Before these last two trades, the Cards had one lefty second baseman in AAA and two switch hitting 2B-SS in AA.  All other position players at those levels hit righty.

Re: 7/31 GC

I switched to the end of the Mets/Nats debacle last night. It was 7-0 after the first inning, 10-0 after two, 13-0 after three, 16-0 after four, and 19-0 after five. Final was 25-4.
The Mets announcers gave up calling the game after the fifth, and took turns reading the 1969 World Series section of the Mets' media guide. At one point, Ron Darling passed the book to Keith Hernandez, and Gary Cohen said "This is like a seder." (Trust me, if you know anything about Passover, that's a funny line.)
Jose Reyes pitched the bottom of the eighth. He plunked Ryan Zimmerman on the backside with a 75 mph "fast"ball. Zimmerman feigned charging the mound. Reyes was not amused.
Nats' reliever Shawn Kelley was none-too-pleased he was summoned from the bullpen to *protect* a 25-1 lead in the top of the ninth. Reyes led off the inning with a single. Austin Jackson was the next hitter. At one point during Jackson's at bat, Kelley stepped off the rubber. Home plate umpire Adrian Johnson screamed at Kelley "IT'S 25-1! PITCH!!" So Kelley pitched, starting his delivery pretty much as soon as he got the ball back from the catcher. The second base umpire then warned him he had to come to a complete stop before he threw the ball to the plate or he would be called for a balk. I'm not making that up.
Then Kelley gave up a 2-run homer to Jackson. He took off his glove, slammed it to the ground (Ted Lilley-style) and then glared into the dugout at Dave Martinez and Derek Lilliquist.
After Jackson's home run, what was left of the crowd started chanting "Let's go Mets!"
As far as I know, Kelley was not credited with a save.

5 Stars.

Shawn Kelly on the post-game?:  "Anything for the team."

In case you're wondering, I'm really enjoying the fallout over the Mets trailing a baseball game, 19-0, in the fifth.

Gee, I can't imagine anyone enjoying the humiliation of a N.Y. team, and especially not the Mets.
