Re: 9/9 GC

Ozuna really got hosed by the home plate ump on his 8th AB.

Re: 9/9 GC

This is one time I agree with Carp.  A pitch called a strike on Kelly was even farther off the plate.  But not so for the Tiger hitters.

Re: 9/9 GC

The strike zone was inconsistent. Gant got hosed on a couple of calls on pitches down in the strike zone early in the game, and then in the next inning he got a call on a pitch that wasn't as good as either pitch that was called a ball earlier.

Re: 9/9 GC

Was there a reason for Bader sitting?  Other than the fact the he is resting on the 7th day?

Thanks for the update.  As is probably obvious, I only tuned in after 5 and missed a lot along the way after that.

Gant was good. His changeup had movement and he was able to keep his fastball out of the middle of the plate. Fulmer was a bit better early He (Fulmer) was perfect through either four or five innings. The Cardinals are reverting to some of the tendencies they had under Matheny - striking out too much, sloppy defense, poor baserunning and inconsistent pitching from the bullpen.

And that too, yes. I didn't expect them to win every series until the end of the season. But I did expect them to beat teams that are playing out the schedule like Cincinnati and Detroit.
They have 19 games left. Thirteen are at home. On the downside, 16 are against teams with a record of .500 or better, and nine are against teams that are going to qualify for the post-season, unless something strange happens.
This weekend's 4-game series with the Dodgers will be telling. I think they need to go 13-6 to get into that wild card game, which they can win. There's no starting pitcher from Milwaukee that scares me.

I don't think they need that many wins.  The only teams with a chance to catch them are the teams in the West, and those teams have games left against each other.  If one of them gets on a run, that team will win the division, and will do so at the expense of the other two teams.

90 wins should be the target.  That requires them to go 11-8 the rest of the way.  Someone in the West may finish with more than 90 wins, but it's unlikely that 2 teams from that division can do it.

Re: 9/9 GC

Adding tallys in the "L" column vs crappy teams is annoying.  I expect them to hang on by a thread the whole way.  It will come down to a win or lose somewhere along the line.  Not sure we will be able to pin point a game or moment but they all count.  Every wild pitch or base running blunder could cost them the wild card at this point.

It would be nice to catch and pass the brewers and play the one game playoff at home.

Re: 9/9 GC

Good point about the morass in the West. I think I heard the Phillies and the Braves still have to play two series against each other, which leads me to believe only one of them will make the playoffs.
I know I'm getting ahead of myself here, but I wonder who starts that WC game? Likely, they'll still be needing to win games to make it, but if they were able to set a rotation, who would you go with if you had one game to win? A month ago, Mikolas was an easy call, but he seems to be coming in on fumes here. I then would have said Flats, but you're more likely to get him for 5 innings because that's when his 100 pitchers are up. And then you're asking a sketchy bullpen to get 12 outs. Gant has been pitching well, but he's also prone to piling up a pitch count. Same with Gomber.

Re: 9/9 GC

Flat with gant piggybacking would be my pick.  Hopefully that would get you to 2 innings of cmart.

Re: 9/9 GC

I dont think the brewers are going anywhere.  They had the kind of additions i feel like can push and pull them through.  So far there additions have been playing well i believe.  Imo they could be a 2011 type suprise.

And he made Jose Martinez look like Roberto Clemente on a routine fly ball to left yesterday.

If the Brewers make the playoffs, Yelich ought to be the MVP. It's either him or Baez.
Their starting pitching and infield defense would worry me, if I were a Brewers' fan. If they can get the game to the back end of their bullpen, they're usually fine.
