Yeah, I'm sure it's mostly for the television networks, so they can tout games between two "ranked" teams.
I know the hiring of Herm Edwards was considered a joke in some media circles, but this ASU gig may work out for him, at least for this year. He inherited a 3rd-year starting quarterback who at least through the first two games seems to have lost his penchant for making spectacularly disastrous decisions at the most inopportune moments, a wide receiver/block of granite who will almost certainly be a top 15 pick in the NFL draft, a sophomore running back who is proving to be as elusive as he is fast, and a veteran offensive line. 
The real improvement is on defense. For the past six years, they couldn't stop a high school JV offense. They blitzed two out of every three downs and gave up huge plays. But so far they seem to be stout against the run, and they have at least one cover corner who is going to end up playing on Sundays.
All that being said, they'll lose to San Diego State on Saturday. ASU is, after all, ASU.
