Playoffs Crap

I have a hard time rooting for a team with Ryan Braun, but whoever wins the Rockies/Brewers series is the team I'll be rooting for in the NLCS.

Re: Playoffs Crap

Same here i guess.  Luke voit has been an interesting story and the yankees are different sort of team then they have been in the past.  However, they are still the yankees and an AL team.

My dad, who only pays attention to two teams, asked me why the Cardinals traded Voit. I told him is was because they already had enough guys who can't play defense at first base.

All three teams I wanted to lose - Brewers, Dodgers and Astros - have won so far. I don't care who wins the Yankees/Red Sox series, as long as one of them loses.

Re: Playoffs Crap

I still can't think of the Astros without being reminded they got 2 top-75 draft picks and $2 million from the Cardinals a year ago thanks to some wanna-be Julian Assange in the organization.

Re: Playoffs Crap

The damage Correa did to the franchise is incalculable and permanent. Not only will the Cardinals be branded as "cheaters" long past the time Correa is released due to his good behavior, but he has also left the franchise open for criticism from nitwits like Bill Plaschke, he of the "Gee whiz what if the Cardinals cheated the Dodgers out of a World Series appearance in 2013?" claptrap.

The sentencing judge must be an Astro's fan.  The monetary size of the fine or Correa seems ridiculous to me.

That's a great article, and I'm glad to see he got some relief on his sentence. His comments do lead you to believe he didn't act alone, though.

Idk about his view that prison life needs reformed.  Maybe but his perspective isnt really prison.  Sounds more like church camp.

Except for the showers with running water, it's probably a lot like the state in which he grew up.

I think his point, and a valid one, is the prisoners are put in there to just sit around.  I have my reservations about rehabl but I'd say do something with their time.  Either work their asses off or give them something to let them keep up and develop new job skills if they want too.  Or just give them all life sentences.  But don't turn them back on the public unless they have a shot at productive work other than drug dealing.
Or make damn sure he never wants to come back

Of course some 25 year old assholes exercising the powers of a federal judge and applying the wisdom of their years would block any such changes.

I know illinois prisons are full of "programs" geared toward education and staying on the right track.  One of the state prisons used to have a work camp and provide there own produce.  I think it worked really well but it has since been done away with.  Budget reasons maybe.  Imo, prison is to soft and getting softer by the day.  It is neither a deterrent or rehabilitation. The majority of the people in medium and max prisons are worthless human beings that are incapable of contributing to society. They are programed to take advantage of the system and that is all they know.  They were raised this way and their parents were raised this way.  The only way to deal with them is for them to be locked in a box for a certain amount of time to give the civil world a break knowing when they are let out it is just a matter of time until they return.  I suppose we could argue all day about why this is the case and what type of reform needs done but i dont see it as prison reform.  The people are broke once they get there.  Correa was a white collar crime and prison is not geared for those people.  If that is even what you call what he wrnt to.  You cant gear prison for your least violent offenders nor can you reform it to such.

The Red Sox must be still playing because the 6 p.m. local news broadcast last night started with playful banter between the anchors and the sports guy about how envious the rest of the country must be of Boston and its sports fans.
And people who can't name one player on the Astros' roster are trying to talk to me about baseball.

"Yeah i sort of did that cynical soapbox thing."

I profess no particular knowledge about the penal system in this country (code for: I'm about to talk out my ass …) but if the situation is so bleak we're using prisons only as holding areas for recidivists, then we're wasting their time and our money.
The article states the U.S. has five percent of the world's total population and 25 percent of the incarcerated population. The consultant quoted in the story blames, without saying his name, the Reagan administration for the altering the purpose of prisons from rehabilitation to punition, which I assume was the result of the "War on Drugs," which consisted of commercials from rock stars who had been busted for possession as part of their plea bargains telling white kids who watched videos MTV to "Just say no …," while allowing for much stiffer sentences for the crack cocaine dealers the DEA rounded up in the inner cities.

Re: Playoffs Crap

My stance is clearly going to be slanted but here it is. I think we need to get harder not softer.  By the time someone lands themself in prison they have been given a second chance about 10x.  Maybe that an exaggeration in some cases but in others it isnt.  So if a guy gets in trouble, gets probation.  Gets in trouble again, extended probation.  Gets in trouble again, gets drug court, gets in trouble again, gets county time.  Gets in trouble maybe and finally gets 2 years prison (which = about 6 months), gets in trouble once out and starts the whole process over again until he is sentenced to a longer prison sentence.  That is literally your typical scenario that some people live their whole life.  Are we not teaching that crime is tolorated?

The financial aspect of it, im not sure how to measure.  This article used 24,000 as the yearly cost to the government for a single inmate.  Idk how they measure that.  I assume by taking the state budget for corrections and divide it by the time by served inmates.  Thats a pretty slanted way to measure because most people in prison were on government assistance when they were put in.  The cost of food, health care and even housing isnt necessarily a new expense to governemnt.  Not only that but money is being spent at a local level by way of law enforcement, probation, courts and county corrections in order to deal with many of these subjects when they are not locked up in prison.  I see that 24,000 as a huge over shot.

In my experience of the very very few people sent to prison very few of them had jobs when they committed their crimes.  As far as reform goes, id start there.  Unemployment is at an all time low.  There are jobs to be had.  Desire and government dependance is why i see most without jobs.
