Guy has a mediocre (.289, 384 HR, 1628 RBI) 22 year career, 15 seasons of which were spent primarily as a DH and the veterans committee deems this HOF worthy?
Congrats to Lee Smith though. I expect it will take him 20 minutes to walk to the podium on induction day.

Question, what is more noteworthy for a career. 10 years of of above average stats or 22 years of average stats.
The dh thing. I get it because the overall value of a player shaded because he never played the field. However if dh is a spot on a mlb roster, shouldn't you honor the best?

Baines was supposedly a good teammate and a smart player. The White Sox retired his number while was still an active player. But Joe Girardi was a good teammate and smart, and I don't think he ought to get into the Hall of Fame unless he buys a ticket.
Lee Smith had some dominant years, was the all-time leader in saves when he retired and is still third on the all-time saves list. I never thought he was slow. I always thought he was just pacing himself.

Baines played more than 1,000 games in field, which to me elevates him above Edgar Martinez, who was a DH only after 3-4 years in the league.
The real debate will happen when Ortiz becomes eligible. He was almost exclusively a DH and his name was on the Mitchell Report. If you don't vote for Bonds, how can you justify voting for Ortiz?

I'm not sure I'd consider Baines one of the best. He was only an All-Star 8 times in 22 seasons and only finished in the top 20 in MVP voting 4 times (never higher than 9th).
Jim Edmonds has a better case for the HoF than Baines, and I'm not sure Edmonds deserves to be in.
ETA: Harold Baines 162 game average- .289/.356/.465, 22 HR, 93 RBI, career WAR 38.7
Jim Edmonds 162 game average- .284/.376/.527, 32 HR, 97 RBI, career WAR 60.4
