Yeah, probably gives you a pretty good idea of what you need to pay to keep Goldschmidt. Arenado is 3 years younger, so 5 years, $160M is probably the number.

Re: 2019

Matt wieters is an interesting signing.  He is a switch hitter with a little pop. Shiltd might actually deploy the backup catcher as well.

Yeah, I like this move. I wonder if anyone explained to Wieters he’ll only get to play 20 games?

Its a minor league deal so it isnt like anyone was knocking down his door.

I hope he likes playing pinochle with Wainwright in the dugout.

I'm hoping he winds up in Memphis until they discover that Molina's knee is more of a problem that we are being led to believe.

From what I hear, Molina’s knee is in pretty good shape. He’s on schedule.

I like the signing because Wieters gives them a competent backup and LH bat (Schildt showed he was willing to let the backup catcher hit). Pena goes to Memphis and if Yadi or Wieters gets hurt they don’t have to start Knizner’s service clock.

You have sold me.  I didn't think about that left-handed bat potential, nor about keeping Knizer off the clock.
The've still got to make a place on the 40 man, maybe two under the scenario you suggested.  I continue to believe they are going to make a trade before the deadline.  Alternatively, they are playing their young outfielders so much that it suggests the possibly that they are trying to find out who to risk by leaving them unprotected.  A lot of possibilites are suggesting themselves so far.

Interesting numbers.  Opt outs? Front loaded?  Seems odd he took a lot less than $30M/year

Haven't been able to find anything other than the numbers. I'm relatively certain there will be some sort of escape clause for both sides. Considering how his defensive skills are already starting to erode, it's hard to imagine a 39-year-old Harper trying to play in the National League.

Re: 2019

"Unlike virtually all recent mega-contracts, this one comes without caveats. Harper gets full no-trade rights and does not possess any opt-out opportunities. The contract won’t come with deferrals, though it is said to have a front-loaded structure."

Odd.

Also, I just read that Winters has an opt out if he doesn’t make the opening day roster.

I dont see how he doesnt.  Pena will be happy just to have a job and the minors will suit him fine.  It will be pretty easy to slot winters behind yadi.

Do you wear pantyhose often enough for it to be an issue?

I’ve never had much of a problem with my wearing them but there were times many, many years ago that they posed a problem for me when other people were wearing them.  And I’m not referring to Joe Namath.

Bud norris got 3mill from the blue jays if he makes the roster and up to 1.25 in incentives.

Wouldn’t you love to be the guy who beats him out for the roster spot.

If he doesn't, I wish the Blue Jays would make arrangements with Jordan Hicks to break the news to him.

Mendoza is going to keep her ESPN gig AND work for the Mets? How does that work? If she's, say, covering a Mets game and figures out a signal sequence or if a pitcher is tipping, does she call down to Mickey Callaway in the Mets' dugout?
