Rain is expected all day tomorrow and it's supposed to be nice Friday. Team made the early call so as to give time for all of the other festivities to be moved.

The hazards of "watching" in silence on Yahoo: How does a called strike also become a wild pitch?

I think he swung at the pitch.

Makes sense. Thanks. Now about this Reyes fellow...

You're obviously not watching the telecast. Hunter Wendelstadt and crew seemed to be trying to steal it from them.
Reyes clearly had strike 3 on the pitch that HW called ball four to Jung and Hudson had a swinging strike that was not called. I think Reyes was really thrown off his game by the calls he was not getting from HW.

It’s as if the umpires want the computers to take over balls and strikes. Not that it would have helped Hudson on the check swing, but the balls/strikes umpiring has been brutal so far this year.

I was really impressed with the way he performed under adverse circumstances. Cool as a camel's balls in the Klondike.

I appreciate the info. Now I realize the whole 'pen deserves much credit for this one...especially Hudson for bailing them out in a tough situation.

Hudson did a nice job, but the batter he struck out bailed him out by swinging at ball 3 on a 2-0 count. Getting that strike settled him down.
The guy who deserves praise tonight is O’Neill. With first and third and no one out, a strike out and a double play could end the inning. Shortening up and poking a single to right was a big league at bat, and a very encouraging sign for a guy with his strikeout history.

There was a time when I would have characterized that as a "bail out the pitcher" swing but I've become so accustomed to seeing that type of swing that I just don't see it that way anymore. Perhaps it is because of the velocity we are now seeing, but that fits my idea of a swing an miss pitch. Or perhaps it is just because about half the time I'm watching Cardinal hitters. Anyway, it sure changed his eye level. I'm looking forward to Hudson's next start.
I had the same thoughts about O'Neill's hit. If he can continue along those lines, I don't think Fowler (or maybe Ozuna) will get much opportunity to salvage his season. Not that I give him any chance of success anyway. But it could save a lot of wasted AB's. Bader could sure profit by the example.
Maybe he should give Carpenter some tips.

Here's my view on the swing--on a 2-0 count with the bases loaded, 1 out and a pitcher struggling to throw strikes, the batter should be looking at a zone about the size of a shoe box or smaller where he can drive the ball. If the pitch isn't in that zone, even if it's a strike, don't swing.
There was never a point where that pitch looked like it was anything other than low and away. Even if the batter makes contact, he can't do anything with the pitch. That being the case, the batter's decision to swing is just awful.
I don't share your optimism that anything O'Neill (or Martinez) actually does well will have any bearing on the continued use of Fouler (or Ozuna). If Fouler hits over .200, I don't think the front office will allow Schildt to remove him from the everyday lineup.
Along those same lines, I just read that the Cardinals sent Gregerson out on a rehab assignment. Assuming he doesn't reinjure himself on the rehab stint, how much do you want to bet that the decision as to who goes back to Memphis is dictated by options and not performance?

So...did Reyes get squeezed again, or was this a legitimate fail?

I was at the game, so I didn’t have the benefit of a TV, but from what I saw he was all over the place.
IMO, he should go back to Memphis until his command improves. I don’t think he's as much of an asset at the moment as they want him to be.
