Re: 4/9 GC

Is it me, or have they gotten really lucky with Bellinger tonight? He's just missed a couple of cripple pitches.

Well that's the first time I've ever seen a guy try to scale the fence, and then have the ball drop in front of him.

It’s really nice of the Cardinals to let a Make-a-Wish kid play LF tonight.

The left side of the Cardinals defense is really putting on a show tonight.

Ozuna wanted to give Miller a chance to prove himself.

Is it wrong that I laughed at that?

DeJong being the exception. I thought last year there were times it looked like he had the range of Derek Jeter with his leg in a bear trap, but he's been solid so far this season.

Re: 4/9 GC

BTW, there is no doubt that Hernandez had his head up hi ass when he got doubled up last night.  But every time I’ve seen that play, it has also looked like the runner on third could also have been dead meat if they wanted to go that way.

Of course Hernandez also showed tonight that it wasn’t atypical for him.

The Dodgers came to Fenway Park a couple of years ago for a regular season series. The Red Sox broadcast crew was apparently ordered to refer to Hernandez by his given name - Enrique - so as not to offend the portion of the Jewish population in Greater Boston which is unfamiliar with Spanish nicknames.
In 1988, the U.S. Olympic Basketball team had a player from Virginia Tech named Verrnell Coles, who almost universally was known by the nickname "Bimbo."  Whichever network covered the Olympics that year ordered Al Maguire and whoever did play-by-play to refer to him as Vernell, presumably to not offend the segment of the female viewership that tended toward promiscuity.

"Who was the George they were talking about?"

A hitting instructor who worked with McCarver when he came up to the big leagues.

Listening to Brad Thompson for four games makes you really appreciate how good McCarver is behind a microphone.

I have looked a number of places on the web (including Wikipedia's list of Cardinal coaches over the years) and haven't found any reference to a "George" anywhere close to the relevant time period.  Also, at the time McCarver came up they didn't designate a specific role for the coaches although they obviously had specific roles.

I am going to guess that he was talking about George Crowe, power hitting first baseman with the Reds who joined the Cards in the late 50's.  His only role in 1961 was a few pinch hitting appearances.  He died in 2011 (I think) in California and his personality very much fits the reclusive man that McCarver described.

He had 37 home runs filling in for an injured Ted Kluzewski in '56 or '57 and was one of only 3 players on the Reds who weren't voted onto the starting line-up for the NL All-Stars that summer.  He was nosed out by Stan Musial.  The other 2 were Hank Aaron and Willie Mays.  That was the year Cincy stuffed the ballot box by passing out ballots and businesses all over the city to employees leaving their shift.

I think that was what led to taking away the straight out fan voting by submitting a written ballot.

Re: 4/9 GC

Crowe also figured in on a rule change that led to a rule that only the first-baseman could use a first baseman's mitt.  Crowe had to play 2d in one game and used his mitt.

Frankly, I don't understand the reason for the rule.

I think McCarver said this guy lived in California.

I remember I was very young when the AS game voting was "returned to the fans," and I didn't find out until much later why it was taken away. Figures the Reds would be involved. I'm not sure they have enough people who go to the ballpark these days to get anyone elected.

The way I've always understood it, there is a size limit on gloves except for the versions used by catcher and the first baseman. I'm not sure what it is. For some reason, the number 10.5 inches from heel to the top of the webbing sticks in my mind. But I don't think it's enforced, like they used to do with the curve of a stick blade in the NHL. At least I can't ever recall seeing a umpire measure a glove with a tape measure.

In the year of the Cincy ballot stuffing, you didn't have to go to the games.  You just mailed in a ballot that you could get at many places.  I remember cutting mine out of the evening newspapers.  The Cincy teams of the mid-fifties had a lot of legit home run hitters.  In the OF, they had Wally Post and Gus Bell (and of course eventually Vada Pinson and Frank Robinson).  Ed Bailey, a catcher from Strawberry Plains, Tennessee, ,was also a big time power hitter.  His back-up was a fat little guy named Smokey Burgess, who didn't hit for power but could have hit over .300 in a gym with the lights turned off.

I remember going to a game with my dad when I was probably 8 or 9 and each fan being allotted one and only one ballot by an usher, who came and collected them a few innings later.
A few years later, they put up those cardboard kiosks with the receptacle for the ballots. You could take as many as you wanted and vote as many times as you liked, as long as you went to the effort to punch out the tabs. Then you turned them in on your way out of the ballpark.

My eccentric American Legion coach once dropped a random Smoky Burgess reference during tryouts, as in "This guy reminds me of …" No one knew if it was complimentary or derogatory until he cut the kid two days later.

As much as the telecasts wants me to believe he is a gg short stop, i dont see that.  He is a average to slightly above average defender.

It should probably be taken back from them simply because fans dont care about the all star game.
